This thread is rated R for...

Postby Saige Dragon » Mon Jul 06, 2009 5:05 pm

Course language. Cussing, swearing, strong or obscene language, profanity, whatever you call it, what are your opinions of it NSG? Are such words needed in today's world? Are the social taboos against them old and failing? Have we become so accustomed to many such words that we no longer consider them inappropriate? Should we be more strict in curbing the prevalence of such strong language? How about ethnic or sexual slurs? Is it okay for one group to use such words but not others? Why is damn worse than darn? Or fudge instead of fuck?

I am curious to see your take on the subject. You don't have to answer all or any of the questions above, they're just some of many I have on the subject. Feel free to pose your own, answer broadly on the subject or go into depth if you'd like.

Meh, profanity is used when I need stronger words to express whatever I need expressing at the current time...

taking the "taboo" away would only make them weaker and wouldnt give me the comforting effect...

Meh, profanity, when used wittily, can make things a hell of a lot more funny.

A reasonably intelligent person with an adequate vocabulary should have no need to ever use profanity unless he fucking feels like it. *nod*

Yes, I use profanity from time to time, but it's almost always restricted to when I'm very angry at something.

I suspect it's some sort of social drag coefficient.

I use it when it feels appropriate to the situation. I don't need to use it all the time, but I don't eschew it just because it's profane. As the bumper sticker says: the more you disapprove, the more fun it is for me.

profanity tends to distract from the point.

as LG said, it can be used to put a fucking strong emphasis on a point.

but Shit... the way some motherfuckers carry on, spouting some motherfucking crap punctuated by fucking swear words does nothing to help their shitty posistion and just gets alot of people fucking riled up.

We don't censor words at my house. I don't believe words are "bad" or "good" but the feeling and intent behind them.

It's just as horrible to call someone a stupid poopy face as it is to call them a bitch, your intent behind it is less than admirable.

It's best to think before you speak and only say things that you really mean as much as possible. Therefore, if I burn myself on the oven (I did yesterday) I will absolutely say "GOD DAMN IT SON OF A BITCH STUPID FUCKING OUCH!!!!!!!" because that is indeed what I was feeling and I felt it needed to be said.

I will not call someone a "bitch" just to hurt their feelings, attempting to hurt someone's feelings isn't very productive or mature.

I'll say say it's fucking annoying watching a TV show being broadcast on an american network (remember Canadian networks are allowed to broadcast over american networks if they are broadcasting the same show (I find it weird that Chrome considers american correct, but Canadian must be capitalized)) and they censor the shit out of it. If you are not going to play half the show, why even play it at all?

Though I do like the warnings. It tells me the show has potential to be good.

And if you're going to hurt someone's feelings at least be creative about it. Anybody can call someone a fuckface, but it takes skill to destroy someone's psyche without using profanity.

Considering the immensely variegated array of diverse and colourful words available to any individual speaking the language of Shakespeare, Dickens, Wodehouse, Twain, etc., usage of profanity is unnecessary, only betraying a certain crudity of mind and vocabulary informing the speaker's prose, and should be avoided. Except where it's funny.

I actually have a hard time swearing because my parents always instilled strongly in me that it was Wrong. I have no objection to others doing so, but if they overuse swear words beyond a certain point, I will begin to doubt their vocabular proficiency, and suspect an upbringing deficient in proper parental care.

That's my biggest complaint about using it so casually. I have never, ever felt so strongly or been so upset that I've need to say anything stronger that "rats" in front of other people. But if I ever am in that state of mind, no one will know, because so many other people say it whenever they need to tie their shoe.

So you'd consider "shit' wrong am I right? But what makes it wrong? Why does putting those four letters in that order now make a bad word?

Yeah, you gotta personalize the insult. Am I a bitch? Yeah. It doesn't bother me EVERYONE calls me that. It's just background noise now. Someone called me something the other day though that really hurt my feelings.......because it was personal.
