Although, it is illegal to sell alcohol on Sundays, so it might actually be a legitimate law. Either way, it isn't really hurting you. It's not like they're fining you for not going to church. If he was going to write you for anything it would have to be a nuisance law for disturbing others with the lawnmower too early in the morning or for washing your car in the middle of a water shortage. If he said to stop because it was Sunday he probably meant it in a jovial or sarcastic fashion while you accidentally took it seriously.

Ever considered that if you and some of your neighbors are all getting visited by the police for mowing the lawn early on a Sunday that you might have another neighbor that's calling the police every single time for nuisance laws?

I'm fairly certain that police officers cannot write "church tickets", except maybe at town fairs and church bazaars when people are "kidnapped" for charity and the like. It kinda has to be an actual, you know, LAW before it can be illegal.
