New Postage Stamp?

Postby Galloism » Mon Jul 06, 2009 5:10 am

Al Sharpton is calling for a new postage stamp:

http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-sharpton-jackson-stamp,0,2019426.story

LOS ANGELES-- Reverend Al Sharpton is using his Sunday appearance at The First A.M.E. Church in South Los Angeles to call for a U.S. Postage stamp honoring Michael Jackson, as well as national day of mourning.

Sharpton faces a steep challenge in getting the stamp approved, as commemorative stamps cannot even be considered until 5 years after the subject's death, according to the U.S. Postal Service.

The only exception to the rule is for deceased U.S. Presidents, who have traditionally been honored with a stamp released on their birthdays, following date of death.

Releasing a commemorative stamp could be a financial boon for the Postal Service as Michael Jackson memorabilia has reportedly been selling in high volumes and in some cases for significantly higher prices after the music icon's passing.

The 1993 commemorative stamp for Elvis Presley became the best-selling U.S. stamp to date with 124.1 million stamps sold, according to figures released by the USPS. Many of the units sold were reportedly kept as souvenirs, rather than used as postage.

Sharpton has been working closely with Joe Jackson and the Jackson family to help plan memorial services and handle other issues left after the unexpected death of Michael Jackson.

During Sunday's sermon he called for nationwide "love vigils" for Michael Jackson on Tuesday, the same day a public memorial will be held at Staples Center.

He urged people to gather in schools, community centers and churches to honor Jackson.

I was going to just sit by and wait for someone to make the joke, but I really can't help myself:

This will finally allow little boys to lick Michael Jackson.

*spanks self*

Bad Galloism! Bad!

What do you all think? Should there be a stamp for Jacko?

I wish Al Sharpton would give the post office a chance to do the right thing with out being told.
but that would entail him not sounding off on his view point for 5 years.

Actually, a Michael Jackson stamp might be a good idea, considering his great influence in music as with Elvis and the Beatles.

I agree but Elvis didn't get a stamp until 5 years after his death either.

Fine. Jackson is dead and, with the electronic age, the gloriously inneffecient Post Office is dying. Let's throw more money into the bottomless pit.

The post office policy is to not issue a stamp until 10 years after a person has died, with the exception of former presidents or prominent members of congress. the Elvis stamp was issued 15 years after, in 1993, not 5 years.

i'd rather not see humans on stamps or money at all.
scenes of nature and technology harmoniously integrated with each other yes,
human faces, no.

i really don't even like pictures that are primarily of humans.
pictures that have humans in them, going about what they would normally be doing to give scale and focus to other, natural and man made objects in them, yes, especially pictures of landscapes or interiors that contain neither the color red, nor anything resembling the private passenger automobile, great.

i don't know if he belongs among people who are honored this way, or deserve to be.
well most who are aren't those i feel would deserve to be anyway.

ghandi, dr king, and einstien are about the only kinds of faces and names really deserve this sort of thing anyway. but i really wish, people who make those kinds of decisions, whatever glacial momentum of protocall they base them one, wouldn't.

i'd really so much rather see pictures of mountains and trains winding through forests on the sides of mountains, and really strange, odd, creative looking buildings, not that austentation greek revival crap, and little furry creatures. both in general, and on things like money, if we absolutely must have money and it really has to have anyone's picture on it, and postage stamps, at all.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.
