No, I meant a Birmingham where the people are known for solidness and intelligence and sophistication.

So - a totally different Birmingham to the one I know...

There's nothing wrong with 'having something to do with' Birmingham.... they have a perfectly adequate airport, for example. It's fine to pass through Birmingham.

Tsk, you can't just declare cities as 'not counting' - else I'm discounting Leeds from the North!

35 odd miles north isn't that close. You can't make out the concrete at least.

That's cheating! Leeds is firmly in the North! However I could probably find a way of counting Birmingham as part of the Black Country, then having the Black Country discounted as part of the Midlands on the grounds of the inhabitants not speaking English or actually being human.

Ah... you went in August didn't you? When Brussels becomes deserted by everyone with enough money to afford a holiday home in the south of France (or even the Ardennes or the seaside at a pinch).

Good food and beer though!

Again, I could get Leeds out on that criteria! And you'd end up having to get rid of Norfolk and Lincolnshire too and then what are you left with? Nothing but the M1 linking up North and South :D

Some would argue that's a small price to pay for getting rid of Lincolnshire...

True, but if we wait a few years, the rising sea levels will probably take care of the problem for us.

I meant in terms of not being human and failing to speak English - though then I'd also have to get rid of Newcastle and I'm quite fond of the place. And the Black Country is... well it's the Black Country, I can't really argue with that one.

Depends who you ask on Norfolk, I've seen people put it in the Midlands before.

Well, I remember you posting a picture of you wearing a top hat, and I know you mentioned a girlfriend before. I know you and I have talked about more than that (and perhaps I should amend my statement to include "british") but that's the intellectual shortcut my mind goes to when seeing your posts :p

It's my little mental image of you, have one for just about everyone I recognize as posters.
