Context is everything. People down here will call each other anything from cabrón (literally meaning goat; not a kind word) to negro/negrito (meaning a black person) and mean no disrespect. The latter doesn't depend on your skin colour, either. It's just something people do to be friendly. Ah. I know nothing at all about the Irish Republican Army, but they seem to be a separatist group. I'm actually just fine with separatism, but looking at history, it seems those who gain their independence rapidly through violence (or really, invoke any sort of major change via violence) seem to be doomed to large problems that exist for centuries. Soviet Russia, the US, and every single one of the Hispanic nations are good examples. I admire their nationalism on a basic sense, not currently aware of their deal with English rule, but I'd say they went about expressing it in the wrong way. You won't catch me (European descent), or most proud African-Canadian people, for that matter, wanting their own nation. We're pleased with where we come from, and equally pleased with where we are now.
