I love the 904. Really, I would take a 904 GTS over just about anything. Unfortunately, they are crazy crazy spendy. Beck makes a repro, but I don't know if I can bring myself to drive a pretender. The engine note on those is awesome. I saw my first one years ago at a Historic racing event, it was pretty bad ass. I don't remember if it was that or the Abarth 356 that hassled a 250 GTO the whole race (though I think that was aided by the Ferrari owner trying not to toss his irreplaceable car into the Sonoma weeds at Sears Point, not a track for the timid).

No, I know you lose.

That's just as bad. A car where you have to replace the engine at a cost of $12,000-$36,000 every 100,000 miles? I'll keep my old gas burner, thanks…

I have a checklist.

1. Works.
2. Doesn't guzzle petrol.
3. Not horribly expensive to buy or fix.
4. Not horribly ugly.
5. Preferably small so it can squeeze in smaller spaces more easily.
