Dept. of Motor Vehicle Style Health Care

Postby You-Gi-Owe » Sun Jul 05, 2009 9:43 am

I ABSOLUTELY HATE having to physically go to my state's Department of Motor Vehicles. I think Steven Spielberg may have had it right when he put the entrance to Hell at a DMV, in an episode of "Pinky and the Brain".

As I've mentioned in a previous OP and poll, I prefer to have poll respondents read the OP, rather than just clicking a poll choice in an automatic, or knee-jerk reaction. If you don't care for my method, please send me a NS telegram instead of posting on the topic thread.

So, here's the question for everyone concerned with the health care debate: If a new government run health care system were to be managed like the Department of Motor Vehicles, would you...

Answer A. Prefer to do a self-surgery at home with rusty implements or quietly die at home.
Answer B. Happily stand on numerous lines while going through the system, singing.
Answer C. Empty your bank account to travel to another country for medical treatment.
Answer D. Stand on numerous lines, going through the system, grumbling to every civil servant along the way.
Answer E. I am a sheep.
Answer F. It's time for a revolution!

I do prefer some good old fashion home surgery. I actually performed a bit on my hand a a few years back with a razor blade, a pair of tweezers, neosporin, hydrogen peroxide, a lighter, and a vast quanity of paper towels. Worked quite well actually.

Which DMV are we talking about? I've been to good and bad. The one in NY was good. Gave you an estimated time. You could go out for a cigarette or grab a hamburger until it got close to your time.

I've been to DMV in Washington state and California. Can't say I was happy with either. In CA you can make an appointment with the DMV, but the time lag between making the appointment and the appointment date is AWFUL.

Just depends on the system used, I suppose.

This.

The OP creates a false dichotomy. Time-wise, the private sector has areas where it's even less efficient, mostly due to constant lawsuits and appeals where the HMOs try to get out of paying. On top of which, our system (where very few who aren't retired have no public option and one in seven of everyone has no option) is always more expensive.

Nevermind that the efficient of government run facilities depends largely on the staff, location, and how well-received it is, clearly the problem stems from it being government run rather than anything else!

Skew a poll and you won't get as many results. Boring and self-defeating.

Because, surprise surprise, you have to stand in line anyway to get healthcare. The only difference is that the guy footing the bill can't suddenly turn to you and say, "Sorry, Mac, but I don't feel like paying for this. You do it." despite knowing that you can't and that's why you even have health insurance.

But, ya know, I'm crazy, what do I know?

I live in a country with health care, and it works. It's that simple. No it's not perfect but it sure is a hell of a lot better than a private system where I have to pay out of pocket. I'm sorry but to make the statement that a health care system is run or should be run like the DMV is ludicrous. The two serve completely different purposes and to say one should be run like the other makes absolutely no sense.

Public options don't have to mean the death of private enterprise.

If I'm caught in a robbery and the police come, they would save my life and do their best to catch the robber. One thing they don't do however is present me with a bill afterward. If I feel the need for more protection or detection, there are a slew of private investigators and/or security firms out there wiling to sell their services.

If my house catches fire and the fire department shows up, they will do their best to save my house and those of my neighbors. They don't however present a bill afterward. On the other hand, there are private fire services that exist and many towns run their own volunteer fire companies to improve their own fire protection services.

When little Timmy goes off to Kindergarten, we don't receive a bill. Both public and private education exists.

All three of the previous are examples of services with both public and private options that have been around for quite some time and that the people have a compelling interest in making available for everyone. Yet when it comes to medicine, I could be caught in a terrible car accident and left unconscious and bleeding. Then I'd be rushed to a hospital by ambulance. Doctors and surgeons would save my life and I'd recover in a hospital eventually regaining consciousness. Then they bill you. So does the ambulance company.

Maybe I'm the nut, but something seems askew.

G. Smile happily as I receive my health care. My dealings with the Commercial License department of the DMV, and their licensing office in Jacksonville, Alabama have all been good, and none of my visits to them have taken more than 45 minutes to finish, nor have they required the normal rigmarole that is the stereotype of the DMV. It's certainly much better than being a student with no insurance, and wondering every time you get a fever, whether you're going to be able to suffer alone, or break the bank to get a shot.

interesting comparison but i dont recall anyone proposing this kind of health care system in the US. so what is the point of railing against it?

Just so. And anyway, if the government option is going to be so very awful, the private insurance companies will clean up.

I think he did this on an earlierpoll, because the poll options don't have enough characters to correctly state his finely-tuned statements.

Answer H. Break the system. Encourage entire state's population to go to doctor once a week with a new list of symptoms that will require expensive test each time.
