As far as I can tell the OP was taking issue with the comments posted, not the court's ruling. Haven't seen anyone here taking issue with that yet. Title is perhaps misleading.

The title is totally misleading. She isn't free to go, it's just that some people are dumb and think she should be.

I, for one, am rather happy that she's getting the same treatment as her male counterparts. If only women could be treated equally in all aspects of society.

It's not totally misleading. I meant the people in the comments section demand she go free. While in other cases they always call life in prison or some ludicrous punishment.

...and yet she isn't going free for 10 years.

I know, but I mean the people who want her to go free. I'm not talking about the case. Get it? If not, please leave.

...and people are stupid? I don't think you can ask me to leave just because I disagree with a misleading thread title.

No, I meant if you failed to comprehend what I'm trying to tell you it would be a waste of time arguing with you.

You're trying to tell me that people hold views which are nonsensical and sometimes contradictory. In this case, they hold these views because these views are also consistent with traditional gender roles so it's easy to do.

In other news, water is wet.

Exactly. And I was trying to shift you away from the "misleading" title. I don't give a shit if you feel this thread is a waste of time. It's not just about me having a problem with hypocrisy, I'm trying to create a discussion.

No. I agree with Kat (I know, shocker there. :p ) that if you're teaching and you betray that trust that has been placed in you, you deserve to have the book thrown at you and it annoys me that we still live in a society where the actions of men and women are judged so differently just because 'Oh, of COURSE a teenage boy would want to get it on with his hot teacher. It makes him the BMoC. There's no harm done.'

It is, to my mind, akin to saying that men cannot be raped because we're just all horndogs.

*sigh*
When I used the word "case" there, I didn't mean "criminal case". I meant "instance". As in "In this instance, they hold these views because these views are also consistent with traditional gender roles so it's easy to do."

Now, I'm not sure which part of the hypocrisy you have problems with. Is it the idea that men always want sex and you believe that this idea hurts men (and only men)? Or do you actually consider this sort of attitude to have a negative effect on women as well?

I can personally attest to the schools keeping files on students emotional states and social positions. after one of the school shootings my own counselor's called me into their office to have a conversation with me, asking me about bullying and availability of guns in my house. at the end of the conversation I asked why I'd been called in, and she explained that a psychological profile had been released on the type of students who did the shootings. she then told me that I matched the profile and that it made her concerned about me. I was in 5th grade at the time, still elementary school in my area. I can only imagine what my file looked like by the time I graduated highschool.

It's not off-the-wall misleading. You would have realized it wasn't all that bad if you read the OP. I was focusing on the people's opinions on the case, not the case itself. Although you can talk about the case if you so wish. That may seem foolish to you but I don't really care for your two cents.

I'm sorry if I say "HIM" I do that alot and I would ask you to correct me if you like.

1.You didn't really read it throughly then. It you did you would realize this "misleading title" bullshit was a waste of time.

2. I do it purposely, correct me if I'm wrong.

3. They don't actually upset me. I'm wondering why people can have extreme hatred for male sex offenders yet go so easy on female sex offenders. I opened that up for discussion and I expect you to stick to that. Like Kat said I can't force you but I ask you to.

they were never diagnosed with such.
One was OCD, and depressive.
The other had aggression issue.
anything else is unverifiable as diagnosis must be done in direct one on one settings.

Not really. There's not much to read in the OP. You state what the case is, what the sentence is and then that people don't like the sentence. Your title contradicted the facts of the case. If it had been a case where the woman went free for a crime that men have been punished for, then this would be an appropriate title.

2. I do it purposely, correct me if I'm wrong.

You purposely assign everyone a male pronoun instead of using him/her or they or <insert poster's name>?

3. They don't actually upset me. I'm wondering why people can have extreme hatred for male sex offenders yet go so easy on female sex offenders. I opened that up for discussion and I expect you to stick to that. Like Kat said I can't force you but I ask you to.

Ok... people can have such extreme hatred for male sex offenders and go easy on female sex offenders because people assume that men want sex and women don't. This is a common gender stereotype and it also results in the prizing of female virginity, the idea that women who enjoy sex are nymphos and women who have many sexual partners are sluts (although at the same time, women who don't put out are "teases") while men who have many sexual partners are studs, men who enjoy sex are, well, just being men et c.

This attitude is harmful to members of both genders. Men often find themselves with women who won't admit that they enjoy having sex, won't tell their partner how to make the experience more enjoyable, don't initiate sex and are generally insecure about the entire thing and feel bad for enjoying it because these women (not all of us) have decided that these stereotypes must be true. They may also feel inadequate if they don't want sex all the time or might feel pressured to have sex when they're not ready for it because of the idea that men are always ready for sex. Women are often stuck with men who think that sex is all about their enjoyment to whom foreplay is the removal of clothing (as well as all the aforementioned hangups and insecurities which make sex less enjoyable) with the additional result that 15% of sexually active women have never achieved orgasm.

If you do away with the idea that women don't enjoy sex and that men are all about sex, you'd see a decrease in the attitude that male sex offenders are significantly worse than female ones.

That said, I'm not sure that I'd put statutory rape of a teenager who claims to have consented (and is close to being an adult anyway) into the same category as entirely non-consensual rape. People who commit that kind of rape deserve much, much longer prison sentences.

I was in 5th grade at the time, still elementary school in my area. I can only imagine what my file looked like by the time I graduated highschool.

That's total garbage though. The Columbine school shootings weren't carried out by people who were bullied. They were carried out by sociopaths who weren't popular, but weren't targets for bullies either.

they were never diagnosed with such.
One was OCD, and depressive.
The other had aggression issue.
anything else is unverifiable as diagnosis must be done in direct one on one settings.

They certainly weren't victims and outcasts though. I read a much longer article about it a while ago, but this summarizes a book on the subject and mentions some key points.

The difference is, often, that it won't usually cause trauma for teenage boys. I suppose that's a little sexist, and I don't have any statistics to back that up, but I know the demographic, some.

You sure about that? That's not just a little sexist, it's very.

I'll go back to my original point. These things are decided on a case by case basis. Suppose Johnny and Mary both committed the exact same crime, in the exact same circumstances, subject to the exact same law... you get the picture. Then I would be mad if they got different sentencing based on gender or some such factor.

Case by case I can understand. I just take exception to the notion that it wouldn't be tramatic for a teenage boy.

If you want it, it's likely not going to be traumatic... Note that I'm not talking about non-consensual rape (different from statutory rape, which can be consensual, as I'm sure you know).

This assumes that all teenage boys want it though. My point being that boys can be forced into it, they can be seducted into it, and it can be just as tramatic. I disagree saying that it usually isn't for boys, but it somehow is for girls.

For sat rape, there's all sorts of worms in that can. It can be consenual, it can be one where the adult uses undue influence on the minor as well.
To those who feel, life is a tragedy. To those who think, it's a comedy.

...except that she received equal treatment under the law too. It's public opinion that's treating her differently and this matters relatively little.

I can attest to schools Therapists keeping a watch on you as well.

I spent a year doing Q&A sessions, as well as getting bitched at by the School Counselor/Therapist.

That seems about right for statutory rape when one party is as consenting as can be given their age-inability to consent (and it's not like she had sex with any pre-pubescent children at least). And she'll hopefully never be able to work with children again. Do male teachers who have sex with teenage students typically get harsher sentences?

Sorry, you don't get to disinvite people from the thread when they aren't rulebreaking.

He still fails. I guess I will have to change the title, now.

People get bitchy over the stupidest shit.

Agreed. And in this case, it's not Dakini that's at fault there.

I apologize if I seemed to get too bitchy for you then, Kat.

I don't like it when people like him come into my thread. I get bitchy. Don't like that? Too bad.

Actually, when you start flamebaiting other people, it's too bad for you. Please look over The One Stop Rules Shop for what is and is not acceptable here.
