I'm ashamed to be Irish, because our economy is in wrecked and we have a banana republic. Also, our hospitality is all gone

Ashamed to be __________?
Well, I don't know if I am __________, but being __________ doesn't strike me as very shameful, so if I were __________, I probably wouldn't be ashamed of it.
Being ~~~~~~~~~~, on the other hand...

I don't get the concept of being ashamed to be [nationality], even if the fucking entirety of the rest of all [nation_members] behave like [profanity].

I'm German. I've had nothing to do with Nazi-ism. I've had nothing to do with splitting the country in half, or reuniting it, for that matter. I'm not associated with those who still find it appropriate to harass people with darker skins, and I'm unfortunately also not associated with those who've protested those people nationwide on May first (I overslept the event I wanted to go to), or on the anti anti-Muslim thingie a few days ago.

You know, just like having the name of a Muse hasn't made the leats bit tainted with any sort of muse-ical abilities. Or being a woman doesn't make me shared-responsible or ashamed of [insert horrible deed of random woman].

I have a sneaking suspicion that the phrase "I'm ashamed to be Swedish" has never been said, and never will be.

It's always nice to be invited to express one's feelings just so someone eise can jump in and make a blame game of it by filling in out of their own imagination everything you did not say, making assumptions about what you do/don't do/have done/haven't done, and picking apart that fiction to find stuff to blame you for.

So, let me see if I understand your position: You don't feel any burden at all at being associated with the recent behavior of Americans and the US, and therefore, you are going to take the lead in blaming any problems that might exist on those who feel differently than you about it. That about sum it up?

Both shame AND pride are supposed to be reserved for things in which you've either failed or succeeded.

The location of my birth is not, be definition, something I had any control over, whatsoever. What's the point in being either ashamed or proud of that?

I am not ashamed to be anything I am.

And nobody else, regardless of affiliations real, perceived, or imagined, can make me feel ashamed. Only I can do that, to myself.

Ah, so it was Terpsichore, then. Why not just go by your middle name? Or did they saddle you with pretension there, too?

Actually, you are, but in this case it's not pejorative, it's empirical. Someone honestly asking you if you're a leprechaun because you're from Ireland both stupid and annoying. And that's a lot of Americans, but it isn't all of us. You needn't worry about implying -- my countrymen do a fine job of making it obvious.
