Not many Buddhists left in India, I'm afraid. Although with the PRC not religion-friendly or Tibet-friendly at all, a monastery in Japan would maybe be a better place.

The Dahli Lama is in India, and India is the birth place of Buddhism. 3 of the 4 main pilgrimage sites for Buddhist are in India, and the 4th is in Nepal.
I think it is just the west's obsession with the Dahli Lama.
