Convert an Atheist for Prizes!

Postby Desperate Measures » Sat Jul 04, 2009 7:12 pm

"A new game show on Turkish television will pit a Greek Orthodox priest, a rabbi, an imam and a Buddhist monk against one another in attempt to convert atheists to their respective religions.

In each episode of Penitents Compete, to be broadcast by Turkey's Kanal T television station in September, the four faith guides will try to persuade 10 atheists of the merits and truth of their creeds.

The show's producers say there is a good chance none of the atheists will be converted, Turkey's Hurriyet Daily News and Economic Review reports.

But those who are will be sent on a pilgrimage. New Muslims will head to Mecca, Buddhists to Tibet and Jews and Christians to Jerusalem – with television cameras following them.

"They can't see this trip as a getaway but as a religious experience," Ahmet Ozdemir, Kanal T's deputy director, told Hurriyet.

That's because only true non-believers need apply. An eight-member team of theologians will vet contestants to ensure they really are atheists before deciding who will participate in the show.

To date, about 200 people have applied to take part, and the first 10 contestants will be chosen next month."

What do you think? I don't know what to think. Is this good? Is this bad? How long before the US steals this idea and pretends it is a new show?

This would be a game show I would actually watch at least once or twice.
Venicilian: wow. Jesus hung around with everyone. boys, girls, rich, poor(mostly), sick, healthy, etc. in fact, i bet he even went up to gay people and tried to heal them so they would be straight.
The Parkus Empire: Being serious on NSG is like wearing a suit to a nude beach.
New Kereptica: Since power is changed energy over time, an increase in power would mean, in this case, an increase in energy. As energy is equivalent to mass and the density of the government is static, the volume of the government must increase.

Sounds like a joke, doesn't it?

A Greek Orthodox priest, a rabbi, an imam and a Buddhist monk walk onto the set of a game show and...

Why do I imagine at least oen of the religious people will be more interested in converting the other religious people than the atheists?

Also they totally need to have Richard Dawkins join in and try to convert those religious people to atheism. XD

Can anyone else see the atheists pretending to convert just for the free trip?

Oh, and this is one of the few television shows I want to watch.

I'm mildly curious myself. Hopefully someone subs it and puts it on DVD or YouTube or something. I don't speak Turkish.

I shall do all I can to watch this. This will be controversial hilarity, especially if the religious preachers turn on each other and start trying to convert each other to their respective religions as the atheists look on.

Especially if they get a Satanist onboard...

Though why Tibet? There is more to Buddhism then Lamaism. A trip to India would have been far more edifying.

Not many Buddhists left in India, I'm afraid. Although with the PRC not religion-friendly or Tibet-friendly at all, a monastery in Japan would maybe be a better place.

Who wants to bet the show will be fixed so that us unholy atheists will be shown to be immoral hedonists?

The Dahli Lama is in India, and India is the birth place of Buddhism. 3 of the 4 main pilgrimage sites for Buddhist are in India, and the 4th is in Nepal.

I think it is just the west's obsession with the Dahli Lama.

Hah, this is awesome. I wonder if they'll actually be converted. I suppose if they are they hadn't thought it through much in the first place.

There should be a poll with the variables religious/nonreligious and this is awesome/this is embarrassing. From a quick look it seems like the religious here disapprove, which is not what I would expect.

I'd imagine that they HAVE thought about it in the first place, and the carefully screened Atheists have already decided which religion(s) they'll be converting to.

He'd be in Tibet if not for the PRC's occupation, but otherwise touché.
