Facebook, Myspace and Twitter

Postby Buffett and Colbert » Sat Jul 04, 2009 6:15 pm

What's are your opinions of these, and other social networking sites? Are they good for reconnecting and staying connecting with each other, or are they just destroying society and turning us into computer worshipping freaks (or somewhere in between)? I happen to have a Facebook account. I used to use far more often before I came to NS. I find it quite useful for finding old friends and staying in touch. But indeed, they are time wasters. Speaking of time, I found this article in Time Magazine rather interesting: http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1902604,00.html.

Facebook is pretty good. MySpace is workable. Twitter absolutely sucks. I had an account for two days before cancelling it.

I'd say somewhere in between. On one hand, they are indeed addictive. On the other hand, I wouldn't have dug up so many relatives if not for Facebook.

Never have used MySpace or Twitter, nor will I ever.
I have FB, had maybe about 90 friends, have deleted over 1/3 of them for the simple fact that they:

1) never communicated with me, nor I them, and even if I did, I would get no response;
2) I vaguely knew them at work or high school, and were never close.

I find it amusing to see people with 200, 300, plus "friends" knowing that they likely do not speak/communicate with 99.99% of those people. I think it's largely an ego boost to look at that huge friends number and think, "Wow I got a lot of friends." In reality, they don't; they just have a lot of acquaintances whom they will never see or talk to.

End rant. :D

My answer is sort of a mix between the last two; I don't consider them worthwhile enough to get around to getting an account for them. But I wouldn't rule out getting an account for them in the future...

I'm 16 and I have had a myspace since 2006 and loved it, now though as I get older it fades on me and has gotten to the point where I just check it because. Though last week I opened me up a facebook and am Addictive to it. The only thing I dont like about Facebook is not enough of my "real" friends have converted over to facebook from myspace. Twitter is never used but it sounds so dumb. And I dont like how myspace is stealing things from from facebook. Facebook is simple and easy and thats what I like about it.

I've got a Facebook a/c but rarely use it nowadays. The novelty of it soon wore off and I check in maybe once a week more out of curiosity than anything.
I just find it very pretentious, arrogant and time-wasting. tbh, I really don't care what people are doing or thinking right now and it's arrogant of them to think they are so important everyone wants to know (just as I think no-one particularly cares what it is I'm doing at any particularly point of the day). If it's important, an email would be nice and more personal. But when it's meaningless trite crap like "xxxx is making pancakes and whistling a happy tune!" I really don't give a shit - unless they're planning on bringing some over for me of course. Worse, I can't believe the number of people who then respond to these pointless msgs.
By allowing people the opportunity to pollute the airwaves with their every thought and action, or by letting make stupid quizzes and the such all Facebook is doing is feeding people's egos nothing more.

Imagine if we all did in RL what we did in Facebook? Walked around all day telling everyone exactly what we're doing or thinking.

I tried the Myspace thing and found it to be absolute shit so I ended that venture a couple of weeks in. I've had Facebook for I guess about two years now and most of the use it sees is keeping in contact with people I've met traveling. The sorta folks I really wanted to get to know better, meet again but happen to live halfway around the world. Most other friends and family I just rattle on their door or give them a call.

Same here. I don't really use any of the group, applications, and only rarely the event features, but it's just a lot easier to search for "Bill Jones" and "friend" him than remember Bill's email is billybob2193@gmail.com.
I don't have a Twitter account, but occasionally read some. Gene Weingarten has pretty funny entries, and I would like to read this when it comes out.

EDIT: That's not an actual email address. Don't try using it.

I've never gotten into "tweeting", even if it IS like chirping. ;) I do have a Facebook account, and though there's a lot of suckage in FB, it HAS helped me get in touch with a few old HS friends, and gives me another avenue to communicate with some of my online friends.

I use Facebook, and I fully admit that a lot of the people I have "friended" are just casual acquaintances. But I like FB well enough, I've actually managed to contact people that I had fallen out of touch with for one reason or another.

Also, I sometimes use it to play Diplomacy.

I am busy. Facebook makes me less busy since some of the more clingy folk are just as happy for me to "like" their status or comment on their pictures than actually having to call them or meet up with them.

Well, I must say that after 6 months of pressure I surrendered to my fiancee's orders and made an account on Facebook.
A total waste of time if you ask me (which you're doing, right?). Also, I prefer the telephone to keep in touch. Much more personal, and
you can have a real, longish conversation instead of just placing some bits and waiting for hours for an answer.

As for MySpace and Twitter, never considered them.
