the past is what defines each of us as individuals Minnas. just because "it's past" doesn't mean it's out of our lives. Should a Rapist be allowed to live without registering his offence because 'it's in the past'?

we are all incomplete, some just accept that fact and live with it. others don't and strive to become a complete person. niether is to be pitied nad niether is to be looked down upon.

It's all personal preference.

Lover denotes (to some) a relationship baised on Sex.

Significant Other is a non-Gender term that covers all bases.

I can say My Significant Other is the best... and the focus will be on the person and not whether or not it's a Girlfriend or Boyfriend with benefits. a potential highjack that, it seems, is famous in this forum.

I can preach to you. I have a SO. And I agree with Galloism. You are wasting your life by only achieving temporary pleasures. Pleasures are fleeting. If you put your meaning in those pleasures, one day you will find that you have nothing left to hold on to.

Alright, down to brass tacks, here's my serious answer. Everything and nothing guides me. I am a very independent person and I despise attaching my self to one ideology or any such thing. All that doesn't mean I guide myself. In fact I find it a bit ridiculous that people can claim nothing has an influence on who they are now or who they may become. It is because of everything, all the circumstances around us as we grew up and matured, the people we've met whether we agree and love them or disagree and despise them, all the falls we've taken, mistakes made, dog poo stepped in, all of it no matter how insignificant it may seem guides us in it's own significant way. It's all of that together, not one or two broad ideals, not a single religion, not the apparent mistakes of others in my life. It's every damn second of my life that I've experience thus far that guides me.

Our societies are getting too generalized and homogenized. I'm also 45, so in my youth "lover" was used more like Lifemate or Significant Other is today.

I never use Significant Other because it sounds too....sterile to me.
