Federalism Or Unitarianism?

Postby Ostronopolis » Fri Jul 03, 2009 7:37 pm

Well the title is self-explanitory, what do you prefer; a Federal or Unitary form of government? Or for you different people; other?

federalist. The more I can play government powers against each other the more freedom I have.

I prefer recognition of the individual's natural inherent sovereignty.

Have to go with Federalism, Id like as many checks as possible on a Government's power...

I have a related question though, the UK is usually listed as a "Unitary State", however, with the "Home Nations" getting alot of self rule, is this still an apt description?

I put other as I think both systems should be combined. Pure Federalism pits the branches against one another which causes unneeded bureaucracy, but methods of keeping the branches in check are needed to prevent corruption. However these impeachment powers should too be limited to prevent misuse of them. See my country's Constitution for an example of what I'm speaking of.

I solved that problem by making mine a Constitutional Monarchy, ;)

Unitarianism, as a rule, although I would support introducing some elements of federalism -- certain restrictions on the government's power, mainly.

For America, Federalism all the way. We're far too large and diverse for a unitary state to serve our needs properly.

For other countries, it's different. I think that the Unitary State works best for geographically compact, socially homogeneous countries like Estonia or Jordan. For postcolonial African countries, I think that a Federal system could help defuse a lot of ethnic and tribal tensions that lead to war.
