depends on how she lived.

Water was dripping down through the celing. so if she had some sort of watering system and alot of flowers...

or if the room was hermtically sealed...

there was no mention of flies... so it could be that the room was just well sealed. :(
on the other hand... I have another set of fingers.

By 85 she had already got most of the rotting done, BEFORE she died. ;)

if it was a tenament/"projects", that was mismanaged, it might, the whole building have smelled bad anyway, on general prinicpals, and if the adjoining units were vacant all that time or their occupants didn't notice for reasons of various other smells, or possibly again, they did and management ignored their complaints, et c. any number of explanations are quite possible.
of course urban legend is also one of the possibilities.
but it really wouldn't surprise me for something like that to really happen.
i've known people, been to their apartments, which like i said, smelled bad enough already, that it might well have gone unnoticed. another thing is during the time the flesh was putrifying, the adjoining apartments might have been empty. it doesn't continue doing this forever you know. its only a matter of weeks before insect scavangers have picked the bones clean. once this has taken place, very little smell then remains.

i haven't seen or had to deal with HUMAN remains in this condition, but growing up in the mountains, when i was going to school, many times i had to walk past road kill and observe this process first hand.

(ps: this ISN'T "a new one". stories of this nature are somewhat perennial, and i rather suspect there have even been previous threads on nsg based on them.)

truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

It was Edinburgh, very polite and quiet. People keep themselves to themselves and neighbours are usually quiet.

There's nothing "new" about this. It happens all the time. I've seen loads of pictures and video of corpses (usu. murder victims or suicides) which have gone unnoticed for six months to a year despite being in populated areas, sometimes even in apartments or in alleys or small backyards in crowded neighborhoods. Bodies don't always stink, and even when they do the smell can be short-lived. Conversely, they can stink terribly under the wrong conditions.

Edit: minoring in criminal justice in school meant looking through large catalogs of the above, I should add. It's not a hobby or anything enjoyable.

How old she was when she died. She would have been 90 now.

the solution is simple get rid of artificial rent payments.
Make everyone bring in a check every month. there you go no ones is left dead for more then a month.

Unless they don't rent. Or they don't die in their rented accommodation.
