Why are so many people so against furries?

I just saw a post regarding this (it was locked due to insufficient OP).
From my time on the internet, there is quite a vocal group of people who are very against furries. They go so far to animate, draw (and produce other media) depicting acts of violence towards furry individuals. I just don't really understand why there is such a negative sentiment.

Honestly I believe these people are just homophobes and transphobes who gave up on bullying LGBTQ groups because we as a society have (thankfully) made an effort to ostracize those with homophobic and transphobic beliefs. Since then they have discovered that furries are an easier target for them to spew out their vitriol.

Probably because those people don't like people dressing up as animals and wearing animal suits and angers some people to the extent of those people wishing furries would die.

Its a fair question. I think its mostly comprised of people who see furries as a community of deviants and strangers which can be safely targeted for bullying simply because they are bullied by so many other people. There is also probably a good amount of people who legitimately feel like furries are sexualizing animals and feel violently disgusted by them, regardless of whether or not the individual in question is actually advocating for such things. While I think making fun of the outlandish furries who actually act publicly indecent and crude is fine, the vast majority of the furry community is targeted by an unacceptable amount of bullying simply because people feel like they can get away with it.

Edit:

I agree fully with this assessment as well.

Are they a bit of a scapegoat?

Pretty much yeah. they are easy targets for people's hatred because the vast majority of people are unnerved by the furry community and are unlikely to stand up for them, so a few bullies can attack with impunity.

One thing I'd add to the above responses is also a lack of understanding, as most anti furs I've met don't actually know what a furry is.

Furries are a subculture, and subcultures have always been hated on for going against the grain. Furries are social outcasts because they're seen as "weird" for being themselves. It's sad but it happens

Adding onto what Adia wrote, some of them equate 'furry' with 'zoophile', they think they are the same thing, and it is natural to hate zoophiles-most people do.

Because they are sad, insecure people who think that by shitting on a group of people whose hobby is not seen as popular, it makes them look better.

It doesn't. It just makes them bullies.

I will admit, this is true. I used to believe the majority of furries were voyeurs with an unsettling passion for bestiality.

This is the best post in this thread so far in my opinion.

basically people don't know what they're talking about, so they default to anger and hatred?

Because dressing up as animals is weird. You should be proud of who you are, how you are born. You really shouldn't roleplay as animals because sometimes it can get too far.

There's a lot of negative stereotypes attached to the furry fandom. Paraphilia stereotypes, behavior stereotypes, etc etc. Makes it very easy for some people to latch onto those stereotypes and start throwing word shivs.

Edit: It also doesn't help that the vast majority of furries don't make being a furry a core part of their identity. It's a hobby and community they enjoy. Which comes with the caveat that the people that do make being a furry a huge part of their identity are the most visible, and it's this demographic that ends up inadvertently reinforcing the negative stereotypes for the people that don't like furries.

Hmm what about cosplaying as the Joker, or Ash Ketchum for that matter?

That's not what a furry is, that is a serious fursuiter, which only makes up about 7% of Furries, most furries juts like anthros, and fursuiters just like cosplaying as said anthro's.

Furry here, personally, think anti-furryism is essentially baby's first fascism, after all. Furries are the out group, whatever that actually means. Some anti-furs get inadvertently infected with the pathOwOgen, becoming furries, and others don't, becoming internet weirdos, who ten spread propaganda, continuing the cycle.

If you're cosplaying as a human character, I see that as fine. But cosplaying as animals can be weird, because you're not genetically an animal yourself.

What do you think of cosplaying as robots, then?

Hmm, what about Hellboy then? Or... I don't know, Nezuko (non human characters)

Who are you to define “weird”?
