I'm of two minds here.

1) the pastor had no business interferring with the officer on duty.

2) the Officer should've shown more restraint and understanding.

I'll reserve judgement until after a trial...

To put it simply, the use of tasers is police brutality and a clear abuse of their power. These officers need to show restraint and the last time I checked, police are not above the law.

I beg to differ.

The ridiculous schism between the thread title and the subject put in the first post, led me (and I suggest, the first page of posters) to see your thread as a pile of crap which I could freely spam, in the certainty that it would be soon locked.

I did not even take the first post seriously, until I was composing a reply and saw in the "subject" box of the post-entry page, that the subject had changed.

I realize that some people might take the subject seriously, and stopped with my spamming.

I think we each have some respect for each other. I'll throw all my credibility with you on the line, and suggest that you owe the Mod who changed your stupid thread title, who didn't lock this thread as a pile of spam, and didn't officially warn you for spam-baiting or flame-baiting, a somewhat more sincere admission that you fucked up.

A bit of "ok, I won't do that again" wouldn't hurt, either.

OK, went and read the thread again.

I didn't see any other poster but myself so determined to spamjack the thread.

There isn't a rule that I know of, against spamjack-baiting, so I'll shut up and try to be nice.

Tasing isn't just painful an distressing, it is a threat to life. It can cause injury and it can kill.

I think it is good that police have an option other than wresting or shooting, but use of a taser should follow a standard somewhere between those two: necessary force to take an arrestee into custody, and lethal force to protect the life of the officer or an innocent.

Use as "tase first, ask questions later" is a load of crap.

That is an erroneous assumption. There is no "simply" about anything, and to state "its an abuse of power and brutality" is near on trolling.

You can do better than that.

The use of firearms by police is not always "brutality and an abuse of their power." Except in the few enlightned countries where police do not carry weapons.

If police carry weapons but are unable to use them, aren't they walking candy-stores, bringing candy to violent criminals?

There are clearly cases where a cop with a gun needs to use the gun.

(I also think there is a very good case for cops NOT to carry guns, but let's grant that they do.)

I could rave on all night. I'll wrap it up.

The use of tasers in place of a gun, in circumstances where without the taser, a gun would have to be used, is reasonable and just. The use of a taser in circumstances where without the taser, physical confrontation and subdual by the police officer is sometimes just, and should be examined. The use of a taser in circumstances where neither physical restraint or the use of a gun would be justified, is police brutality and a clear abuse of power.

You might want to put a stronger case than that, but this seems stronger to me than calling "troll!"

How exactly is the use of a taser automatically brutality and an abuse of power?
