Now, come on... it wasn't that bad. Just, calm down. We don't need to go through all this again.

Googling people is not creepy, so long as you do it in moderation. It's curiosity -- totally natural, if childish and self-indulgent. Just like any other kind of gossiping, whether it's harmful or not depends on how you do it and what you do with the information.

If you're just skimming public information, there's nothing creepy in that.

If you're literally following someone around the web so that any forum they go to, you're there; any shopping site they frequent, you get an account, too, etc. -- that's super creepy. If you're making an effort to dig out minute details of personal information -- that's creepy. If you hint around to them that you're keep tabs on them and know things about them -- they may need a restraining order.

But generally, what people do in public is not private, so learning it is not intrusive.

That said, there are a few publicly available things that I find extremely questionable. My personal red-flag special is Superpages.com's person search and reverse search functions. Looking up an individual that way will give out WAAAAY too much information about how to find that person, right up to driving directions to their house or workplace. Not cool, imo.

So your name's Paul? 8)
Ophelia you must remember! Veronica's America is not like--- is not like Charlotte's, one to savor cosmic flavor then Alison whispers, "Remember! Change waltzes in with her sister Pain, waiting for you to send her away. Wish her well, break the chain, break the chain!" I feel you, sweet Ophelia...

Um...that's what getting an unlisted number will do for you...keep you from being listed in the phone book. It's just that the phone companies charge a bit more for it.
