Religious people. (are you?)

Postby Latin Hispania » Thu Jun 03, 2010 12:31 pm

Lately, I've been reading many threads involving people and religion.
I would like to know how many people are religious (any religion), how many people are atheists, and how many people are agnostic.
If you provide a small explanation as to why you are or aren't religious, it would be appreciated.

Mr. Wallcott: Are you sure about that, Agent Cho? Because I can make one phone call and your career is toast.
Cho: That's impressive. The best I can get with one call is a pizza.

I was raised to be religious, but it became problematic when the questions I asked weren't supposed to be asked. Good Christians don't ask why things like homosexuality are bad, God says so right in the Book! So I moved away from religion to find my own path, and the more I looked the less I believed in God. Now I no longer believe, and have learned to appreciate the value of verifiable evidence.

You may want to add a poll.

Raised presbyterian and still worship within presbyterian congregations. I can't give a reason that i've remained religious other than that I have. Not very helpful I know.

If you edit the initial post and look below the [Save] [Preview] [Submit] buttons you'll see an Options tab and Poll. Click the Poll tab and fill it out. You may end up editing a few times before you get it right.

At the bottom of the first post there are two tabs: Options and Poll Creation. Go to Poll Creation.

Also, I tend to identify as religious, but we all know the problems with self identification.

I'm quite open on the use of divine narrative as a cultural and meditative device, and reasonably happy with the idea of God (though obviously outwith empirical discourse), but fiercely opposed to hierarchical and supremecist religion. My stance is simply to oppose any attempt to monopolise truth. If I'm rebuked for not accepting your presumptions, you're fair game. Such often sees me come into contact with the naive side of Atheism, though it's generally the Christian Right that bears the greater brunt of my opposition.

I've had a few times when a crisis of faith has left me feeling that way. I suspect that's where it comes from. Not that I believe the feeling remains long term but for someone going from a religious to atheistic viewpoint it can feel like losing a friend. One that you haven't yet learnt to be without.

I was not really raised religious, although my parents sometimes made us go to church for the "community aspect". I always hated church. Nonetheless, up until age 8 I would pray at night, thanking him for the "whole-wide world" and then asking him to get me toys or "get me to sleep within five minutes". I eventually realized that none of my praying was working, so I stopped. Deism came next until about 10, at which point I came to the conclusion that all assertions about the existence of a "God" were pretty absurd.
