What does "Freedom" Mean to You?

Postby Antilon » Wed Jul 01, 2009 10:34 pm

For most people, "freedom" means the right to vote for a representative in government. For some people, "freedom" means to live a life without worry. For others, "freedom" is an escape from slavery. And for that small minority, "freedom" is a world without government. So what does "freedom" mean to you?

"Freedom" to me is the ability to make choices and to accept responsibility for those choices.

To me, freedom means a right to believe and do what I want without any discrimination from law, as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights and freedoms of others (including animals).

freedom to me is much like the idea of freedom to the author of the thread. however freedom to me can be summed up in two guidelines 1) live in harmony with all around you 2) do not impose yourself upon any persons freedom of choice when it comes to their own person.

free⋅dom  /ˈfridəm/ [free-duhm] –noun
1. the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint: He won his freedom after a retrial.
2. exemption from external control, interference, regulation, etc.

Freedom is knowing that all we have to do now, is take these lies and make them true, somehow.

Freedom is knowing that all we have to see, is that I dont belong to you - and you dont belong to me.

Freedom is when you've gotta give for what you take.

Freedom is a tool, a means to an end. I don't care much about freedom in itself.

I know this phrase, but I have trouble understanding it. Does nothing left to lose mean that a person stops caring about anything and everything?

Freedom is being allowed to express myself, to protest, to think, to create, without any group or person having the legal right to stop me from doing so. If this means expressing my like/dislike of the government, so be it. If it means creating a pro-government book, so be it. If it means creating a device that will supersede Oil as a power source, so be it.

The basic idea is, if you have something you care about, it can always be used against you to reduce your freedom. Only once you have nothing are you truly free to do whatever you want, and no one can hold anything over on you.
Venicilian: wow. Jesus hung around with everyone. boys, girls, rich, poor(mostly), sick, healthy, etc. in fact, i bet he even went up to gay people and tried to heal them so they would be straight.
The Parkus Empire: Being serious on NSG is like wearing a suit to a nude beach.
New Kereptica: Since power is changed energy over time, an increase in power would mean, in this case, an increase in energy. As energy is equivalent to mass and the density of the government is static, the volume of the government must increase.
