If I piss in a cup and put a lid on it, that is not art, taking something in the public domain made by someone else and burning the edges of it is not art. If she had actually sewn together a flag and did such, sure, art. But since she could have gotten the same effect by pissing on the thing, no, I say not art.

Yes, it is an affront to veterans, it is not art it's Assholery! No national flag should EVER be mistreated like this, this is a disrespect of Memorial Day, which ended yesterday! I'm offended by this travesty which some dumbasses call "Art". If this is Art, then I guess the Muslim rallies where they burn the Israeli and American flags could be called "Art Fairs".

First off, what art is is very subjective. There is no established definition. To me, yes, I wouldn't label that flag as art, but it is. In a mediocre shitty way, it is. The student was expressing something. Now, how do you know she didn't sew the flag herself and then burned the edges? Hm?

You are confusing art and craft. Craft is about the manual ability. Art is about the symbols and the meanings behind them. For instance, a hand made exact copy of the Mona Lisa is craft, not art, as finely made as it can be; meanwhile, a chair found in the street and slightly modified can be art if it makes you think about it as something else than a chair.

Not exactly a recent theory, by the way. Check, for instance, Marcel Duchamp's readymades.

It's slightly unoriginal really - a slightly burnt flag representing the frayed dreams of the American ideal - I'd give her a D- for not thinking of a more original way of expressing that,

Could try harder.

EDIT: I note Chorridonia's made this point already..

..ooh, puns!

Anything can be passed as art today provided you call it as such then it is art.

Practically anything can be passed as art nowadays. I don't really care in this case since it's not worth the effort and I don't want censorship even though I find it distasteful. Yay for apathy.

Not sure I understand the obsession about burnt flags and how it's such a hot button issue. Is it art? Probably not good art in this case if all there is to see is a burnt flag.

Burnt toast probably counts as art too: Symbolizing the darkness and loss of family in the post-industrial society where parents must start their commute to work without having shared the morning meal or even kissed their family goodbye.....the trail of blackened crumbs representing our disconnection and isolation from each other in this dried out husk of society.
