Good art by bad people

Postby Elwher » Sun May 28, 2023 11:43 am

From The Atlantic:
https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2023/05/separate-art-from-artist-cancel-culture-monsters-book/673497/?utm_campaign=the-atlantic&utm_content=true-anthem&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&fbclid=IwAR3oFR-6pKIubnxePfJ1-KQ0CNJGC7EPcNaZadAZse2sqASkxOAn-Q3Ry3k

I agree, the art is separate from the artist, and bad people can make good art that is acceptable to enjoy; just as good people can make bad art that is fair to dislike.

What say the group?

i'm reiterating this point from another forum i frequent: if the art is good enough, i can most likely separate art from artist.

Yes, you can make such a separation. I find that Emilie Autumn is a good musician, but she’s a terrible person.

Growing up, my dad introduced me to the music of the Velvet Underground. The band put out absolute bangers back in the day, but unfortunately frontman Lou Reed was kind of an asshole. At least in the case of Velvet Underground, you can say the music is technically not just Reed's music, but the whole band's. But I don't know if I can listen to Reed's solo music knowing now what I know about him as a man. With how many problematic musicians there's been, it's almost a breath of fresh air to find one who genuinely is a good person.

Never ask a man his salary, a woman her age, or C.C. DeVille to play a guitar solo.

I whole-heartedly agree

You don’t have to change opinions on a piece of art just because it was drawn by a bad person, it’s still good!

I don’t listen to her music anymore. Autumn, I mean. She’s a sucky person, but I must admit she has the musical chops at least to create good music. I just won’t sponsor her.

Not at all; your post was the first I had heard of this incident. Actually, the death of Rolf Harris and the Atlantic article combined to make me wonder how the group felt.

For me, it depends. Is my appreciation of that art going to benefit the artist I don't like?

If I listen to a song on Spotify (say), the artist is going to get paid royalties. I don't want them to get my money, so I don't listen.

If that artist is already dead, or if I bought CD of the song long before I started disliking the artist, then they're not benefitting from my money. So it's ok to listen. Though I can't listen to the song without thinking "what a horrible person".

Sex Pistols' bassist Sid Vicious was charged with assault plus the murder of his girlfriend. Yet NVM The Bollocks is one of the best albums I've ever heard.

Roald Dahl was, by some accounts, grumpy, unfriendly, egocentric, a bully who treated his wife with contempt and had numerous extramarital affairs. He was also a self-affirmed anti-Semite, admitting his dislike for Jews in an interview shortly before his death, but all that makes no difference to the fact that he was of the world's greatest authors of children's fiction.

You can absolutely separate art from the artist in most circumstances. Like, to use a very recent example, Kanye is fucking insane but a load of people still love his music.

I agree that you can separate art from the artist in almost all cases. The only exceptions are when the bad artist's bad aspects/beliefs are reflected in the art and/or when enjoying the art directly benefits the artist. Thankfully, that doesn't happen too often; I can only think of one or two people that meet those criteria.

If you don't want to read Dilbert cartoons anymore because Scott Adams lost his mind, I guess that's fine. To be honest they haven't been all that funny for a while anyway.

But you also shouldn't feel bad for enjoying the good ones. Or let his antics spoil them for you. Art belongs not to the author, but to us all.
