A few years back, we had a woman staying in my mom's house for the winter, and she asked Mom and I if there was any history of haunting, or if anyone had died in the house, because she kept hearing clanking and rattling noises like chains, and the stairway door would slam when no one was around. And, I mean, yeah, the house is 170 years old and has hydronic heating. It's drafty. It makes noises, especially in the winter. It rattles and clanks and creaks. There are drafts up the stairwell because heat rises, and it'll blow the door at the bottom closed if you leave it standing open. (We don't in the winter, not only to prevent slamming, but because the heat going up the stairwell means it ends up hot upstairs and cold downstairs.) She told me one time she came into the kitchen and the rocking chair was rocking by itself, and her cat ran out of the room in terror. When I offered the obvious explanation, she told me the cat didn't get on furniture, which is frankly a more unbelievable premise than the ghost thing. My favorite, though, was when she told us her daughter heard a creepy noise at night, and so she ran outside to hide in the barn until her mom got home. I mean, there are things that actually exist in the barn. I'd far rather deal with a ghost than an angry raccoon.

Even leaving aside the minor problem that ghosts aren't real, I have serious doubts about your ability to determine that an entity is "pure evil" as you drive past it in a car. Are you a paladin? Do you get detect evil as an at-will SLA?
