Pornography is an entire industry though. And you cannot feasibly give a lot of people jobs without repercussions and complications. And the government's would have to pay for rehab, increasing the cost of banning pornography.

Catholics in particular have a very easy way of banning an ideology. Excommunication. While technically you can argue that this "only" banned Catholics from supporting/defending Communism and didn't technically ban the ideology itself, it's a very roundabout and honestly lame excuse for what it's really doing. Banning the ideology. You can't threaten devout Christians with excommunication for supporting an ideology while also claiming that the ideology isn't banned.

It is right there. The ideology isn't banned. Because you can ban an action but not a thought process, further more Catholicism is a religion and there for exists through voluntary association. Under what voluntary association's umbrella are you advocating " line reasoning should be banned."? Groups and religions can and do kick people out for reasons of there own. If you do not accept Jesus as the Son of God you are not Christen, But even there you cannot be excommunicated by the act of thinking. You MUST ACT on that line of reasoning for any action to be taken against you. There are millions of supposed Christens that are in fact agnostic because no one can ban a line of reasoning. Only the acts behind the line of reasoning.

I think the bold specifically is where I am not understanding this line of reasoning. How are you defining "act of thinking" vs "action." I've been working under an assumption that action covers more than protests, voting, or joining political parties (although you might not consider these to be actions either?). I also consider actions to be written tracts or speeches defending/promoting Communism, but my understanding is that you disagree with this line of reasoning and consider these to still be "acts of thinking."

To me, an act of thinking is more literal - just thinking. Only going as far as to write about the thoughts in a personal journal would be the only physical aspect of this thought. But when it comes to spreading the idea, the act of thinking becomes action. When speeches or thought pieces are written they are typically done so as a form of persuasion, so therefore these would be actions. These actions would be seen as grounds for excommunication (in this very specific example provided earlier).

But again, I might be misunderstanding your perspective about thought vs action here. This is also straying very far away from the initial discussion of a porn ban, so to drag it back to the topic: if porn and support for porn were grounds for excommunication just as Communism once was it would not be limited to just the production. Vocal support would be grounds for excommunication, and (going by how I've been defining it) both the thought and action of Pornography would be essentially banned by the Catholic church.
