The Book of Abraham is a LDS text part of the holy book called the Pearl of Great Price. Joseph Smith claimed to have translated this text from an Egyptian papyrus. Onto the actual discussion.
So NSG, I've been thinking lately about churches such as the Quivers, the Jehovah's Witnesses, and the Mormons. I personally find them to be almost cultlike in instances, and harmful for the individual and the society. This is due to rampant misogyny, homophobia, and racism within these churches, as well as the doctrine that is embedded into members by the churches, namely that the Church is always right, that certain people are just superior, and that if you think outside their doctrine, you are not as good a person as everyone else, and you will go to hell or an equivalent.
So, what do y'all think? Are they the bane of society, are you a member of one, or somewhere in between? Discuss, and preferably do so within the site rules. Can't make you, but I will be disappointed if you don't.

Like any belief system that lays sole claim to Christianity but are not orthodox in doctrine nor catholic in essence, the matter is civil and theological with others who name the name of Christ. Mormonism as an organized institution resolved its war against the State of Illinois (and the US Army); officially recanted of the twin relics of barbarism; and joined American civil polity as the State of Utah, the other States giving them the full faith and credit due them as individual Citizens long ago.

Mormonism might be a cult (in the Evangelical sense of the term), but it is a quintessentially American cult, and as such are outstanding Americans in the sense that the LDS understanding of Civic Virtue is identical with that of traditional America. Each new generation of Mormons deal with the social issues in front of them lawfully and contemplatively. As such, at this present time, they make great neighbors.

Religion fosters an authoritarian, anti-intellectual, traditional, and discriminatory social atmosphere that provides a fertile breeding ground for toxic ideals like racial nationalism. This is doubly true for religions like the Mormons, for whom 'tradition' in that 'traditional' includes a lot of racist nonsense that has not been edited out yet.

A holy book does not need to explicitly state "those people who do not look like us should be treated with contempt" for that to be essentially what it preaches.

I actually like Mormons. I grew up around a lot of 'em, and while I find their Church to be odd, some of their beliefs to be strange, and their leaders to be corrupt, I still like them. I can say a lot of nasty things about my own religious background (Catholicism), but that doesn't mean I shit-talk Catholics. For the same reason, I won't shit-ta Mormons when most that I've associated with are very kind, generous, and family-oriented.

The FLDS, though? That is a nightmarish cult.
