Seriously: Dead Celebrities...It's Getting Old

Postby Rhodmhire » Wed Jul 01, 2009 8:06 am

Look, death is sad. I don't care who's dying, it's a human life ending on this Earth--it's sad. And celebrities are people too, and the ones who have died recently--Carradine, Fawcett, Jackson, Mays, McMahon: I have nothing against them, I highly respect many of them for their doings, and respect all of them as human beings.

But come on...it's been going on for a while now, don't you think it's time to cool it down some more? I think it's getting too important...

For example, I watch HowTheWorldWorks on Youtube, he's one of the vloggers I get my news from. (I get like 80% of my news from independent or online people.) And this video, specifically the subject mentioned in the title, really pissed me off, not that Fox news didn't do good in the ratings, it's why they didn't that pissed me off, and you'll see why at the first 6 seconds of the video if you decide to watch it:

And please, to all you who actually watched that horrible (on both sides) debate between TheAmazingAtheist, ThunderF00t, and HowTheWorldWorks--don't hate me for watching him.

Point is, if news stations are devoting this much time to it, it's fucking crazy. And at what better time to replace facts and breaking news reports about government corruption and so forth with mindless media? Cap and trade, the riots in Iran---so much is going on, yet we're more focused on Michael Jackson?

Look, he was a legend, he died, that's all I need to know. If they want to do a little five minute report on all they know, that's wonderful, don't do a fucking update every two minutes for hours on end.

I'm hoping this will die down soon, not because I hated everyone who died, but because I'm sick not even being able to turn on my computer without getting "MJ DEAD OMG!" "Billy Mays!?! Who's Next!?!" "Another Celebrity Dead, Breaking News, More Important Than the Inevitable Demise of our Country!"

You know, that stuff enveloping the news that actually matters in the long run.
Part of me grew up here. But part of growing up is leaving parts of ourselves behind.

It's a part of the growing obsession with Celebrity. Because they are venerated as gods by more and more people each day it seemingly becomes bigger news when they die. Also, similarly to the plane crash thread a few days ago, it's a part of a news cycle, more celeb deaths are being reported because such a huge one happened just a few days ago. The fuss will die down once MJ's been buried.

While the majority of people are inexplicably obsessed with celebrity, we must not forget respect.
I understand many people love Micheal Jackson. Many people listened to his music, but beyond that he is just a man.People should respect the fact that his family is grieving his loss. I am in agreement that the news agencies should actually start reporting the news, but its been this way for a while now. I suggest people actually watch the zeitgeist movies, both of them. Disregard the religious parts those arguments have holes shot all through them. When it comes to the political points made they do hold water. The governments of the world are beginning to deny their citizens freedoms, and everyone knows this. In another thread there is a small snippet of whats going on in Canada. The powers that be in that nation are trying to give the police the ability to find private information through a persons ISP without a warrent.
Our own government is a hollow shell of what it was intended to be. All around its a sad sad picture. A lot of this BS is getting really really old. Its also interesting to look at the Cap and trade legislation. With that i do agree because it will eventually turn people onto renewable energy sources. However with their health care legislation its doomed to failure. They are talking about penalizing companies that don't provide benefits, and cutting the funding for institutions that provide care to uninsured persons. Now i don't have a problem with that in and of itself. What i do have a problem with is no mention of regulation on the insurance companies. Without a tight fist on the reigns they would be allowed to run rough shot over everything charging what they wish for their services. In the end its all about money. Sad, but true. All about money.
