America becoming a dictatorship would cause a lot of chaos both nationally and globally. This would be the worst-case scenario for the future of our democracy and freedom and you can count me out of it. I don't care whos controlling it or what their beliefs are. I will never trust a dictator.

We already had a dictatorship under Lincoln and a close run thing with FDR. Ultimately, they will pop up from time to time, but they aren't stable like hereditary monarchs. US is too large for a dictatorship at present, but so was the USSR.


IMO:

A loose confederation, in which the States are bound to defend one another. Whether said states within the Confederation are democratic or no is another matter. States within the confederation should be able to abstain from conflicts abroad, as in avoiding the repeat of the disaster of WW1. Best way to prevent the US from having another civil war or seeing states leave the Union for good.

Granted, the US will slide into dictatorship as Republics have short lifespans. Parties suck, period, and just divide the people into camps. Moral issues, such as slavery or abortion or what have you, are just lighting a match in a powder keg. The decline of religious practice isn't helping, it's just making the crazies crazier.
