Yes, I do think we are heading for a second civil war, but lets not delude ourselves here, it will not be the Battle of Gettysburg 2.0: Electric Boogaloo.

It would be more like the never ending bloodbath more akin to the Syrian Civil War that would probably last for well over a decade. Not only that, but it would probably start out as something along the lines of Democrats v. Republicans, but both parties would likely split into multiple other factions. All fighting amongst each other, mainly through disorganized militias.

Establishment figures might fight to keep the status quo intact, but they will likely fail.

Jokes aside for the several amount of times, I would say no. While politics are more polarized, they don't seem to be far to divisive, and the Civil War taught a lot of us that states leaving the Union would be met with fire, which would likely dissuade many. Plus, if anyone would make themselves leave the union, It would almost certainly be met with an Invasion from the US, and with their support from a lot of nations around the globe, would most likely win the war.

Have people already said that modern insurgencies don’t resemble the 1860s, that “civil war” and “peace” are hard to define in the first place, that it would be “like Syria x1000” or whatever, that the American right is clearly moving a radically autocratic direction and preparing for/legitimizing mass violence, and that war isn’t likely because we all just have too much to lose or something? Am I missing any cliches?

Directed towards the OP and certain other posters, I must say to say "white Christian nationalists" will start another civil war cause the "white Christian" south started the last one, is utterly ridiculous. After all, "white Christian nationalists" (I mean, what d'you think Lincoln, Grant or Sherman, etc. were?) fought to suppress slavery and the Confederacy. A better (and more historically accurate, though far from perfectly so) division between the sides of the civil war would be the "Anti-Slavery, Pro-Federal, Industralized-ish North" and the "Pro-Slavery, Pro-States-Rights, Agriculturized South". (And you would have the middle states which were kind of a mix of the two.)

Furthermore, to constantly harp on "the far right! the far right!" is ridiculous in this day and age as even libertarian types get called "far right" by some hard line liberals. Undoubtedly, there are those who actually are far right and do want a "regime change" (*looks suspiciously at USR*) but to label almost all conservatives as "far right" is as ridiculous as conservatives labeling all liberals as "far left".

Because I foolishly harbor a forlorn hope that someday someone on this forum will produce interesting or meaningful analysis of the trajectory of the American empire, and so it frustrates me to see such endless variations on the same couple tidbits of common wisdom

It's in the name, it's a form of religious nationalism, which either Lincoln (who I doubt was very religous albeit he WAS religious), Grant (who refused to proclaim america a christian nation (read protestant) during his presidency), and Sherman who I have no idea what he actually believed in but probably wasn't a christian nationalist.
