DeSantis' plan seems to be pretty clear: run further to right on certain issues on Trump. That would be on abortion, guns, immigration, healthcare, and COVID-19 Vaccination. It seems his attempt is to out trump, Trump. He hopes that will win over conservative voters and take advantage of Trump's reluctance to take an official position on key issues. But he does risk alienating independents, women, and moderates should he win the nomination.
Basically, we can hope that DeSantis and Trump damage each other at this point.

How exactly is he supposed to run to the right of trump on immigration? By suggesting that the border be completely shut for 10 years and anyone who tries to cross will come face to face with the combined national guards of every state on the border?

Invade Mexico. Can’t have an illegal immigration if there’s no place for the immigration to come from

Some states do. They are called State Defense Forces and are mostly made up of veterans and other volunteers.
Legally they are considered civilians and not actually military members. The SDFs are more in line with a paramilitary than an actual militaryThe United Penguin Commonwealth wrote:apparently desantis is trying to revive florida’s military force, which would be under his control. It’s already been revived. Happened in 2022
Though it’s a volunteer force so not exactly a hit squad
