Tiktok is bad for most people in the same way most social media is. It shouldn't be banned if it's not a security threat, but there should be more restrictions on Social Media, be that legal restrictions or ones put in place by parents, for example.

It'll just be replaced with something else like it. Reels on FB/Insta, something new. Hell, TikTok is just a version of a bunch of other shit that came before it that I can't remember the name of. Vine? Vine was one of them.

At least one that isn't collecting data for a foreign power or manipulating minds with malicious intent.

There are multiple articles linking Tiktok to radicalization and other harmful content. It's actively undermining the mental and social health of our society, and I don't believe it's just an unintended byproduct of an algorithm designed to keep you watching. It's pretty damning that the Chinese restrict the usage of the app domestically yet aggressively push it on American youth. Don't get high on your own supply.

But they also are harmful in that they are addictive and that they encourage comparing yourself to others or getting anxiety or what have you. They are especially harmful to kids. You can't just "not use it", and you shouldn't just let your child use it however you want.

Not having firsthand experience does not negate someone's ability to read up on and learn about topics.

There is a problem. There isn’t a “manual” for child raising. Two examples? Friends of ours were having a kid and the woman read just about every thing there was to properly raise a kid. It all went out the door; as the kid grew. My wife and I have a dark sense of humor. Our kid was the child of light and became more or less a prude.

There is no sure path how they will turn out.

Sometimes; “protecting” your kids can set them on the path for issues when they are on their own (ie. Not going into details, over protected kids in dorms).

I don't support banning it, but I also don't support how it's being used now.

That’s fine. The problem is how to manage it. They don’t have content filters. Well I am not sure; I only lightly use it. Even then; for many who demand that; how much hypocrisy is involved? They demand filter ability and yet argued government overreach when regulations are pitched for the things they like?

Personally; for government devices and well even the users? The program should be banned. Even companies can make that argument on their equipment and in instances of personal gear being used for work.

I wonder though if this is just a “dog whistle” for the republican followers?

This. Pretty much the only reason people in the U.S. government are even considering banning Tiktok is because "China bad". If it was owned by an American company they wouldn't give a shit about the information gathering at all.

People would complain that banning Tiktok is authoritarian if it wasn't Chinese.

I support banning Tiktok, Facebook, and Google because they violate user privacy, but that's not the only reason why I oppose them. Privacy aside, the overuse of interest-based algorithms is horrible for society. The internet used to be about people sharing things, now it's all so centralized that it's become difficult for anyone to discover new things. Mainstream art, music, and movies are now so formulaic that it often intentionally avoids having any point, and it can all be safely pushed by algorithms to make as much money as possible before everyone quickly forgets about it. I think we'd all be happier without these companies.
