The Ukrainian War V: Tanks For The Memories

I encourage everyone to consult the news sources of their choice for up-to-date news. Suffice it to say, the situation is fluid. The Russians have adjusted their goals, concentrating on the east and the south, while showering Ukraine with missile strikes and artillery barrages. The Ukrainians have counterattacked and regained territory, not to the point of evicting the Russians but enough to make them think. Amidst the bombardments, rhetorical rhetorical bombast continues and the US and Germany have promised tanks.

The previous edition ...

Latest reports indicate that fighting is underway south of Ivanivske and the Western GLOC leading to Bakhmut. If nothing drastic happens in this sector, we can expect the operational encirclement of Bakhmut soon.

The US will discuss "very carefully" with Ukraine and its allies regarding the potential transfer of F-16 jets. This is great, but the dense Russian SAM networks "would dramatically reduce effective missile range and limit strike options" for the F-16s.

British intelligence: Russia is lying about its advances in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. They likely made some local probing attacks on Orikhiv and Vuhledar but there was no significant breakthrough anywhere.

With regard to the last question from the previous Ukrainian thread, national sovereignty would refer, in the context of Ukraine, to the right of national self-governance. Russia is, therefore, attempting to deprive Ukraine of that ability.

Since I believe in global, not national, governance, I would rather see a sovereign, global federation of nations, including Ukraine and Russia, i.e., an end to national sovereignty.

Maybe, but it's a play on a popular song of long ago.

"Thanks for the Memory" (1938) is a popular song composed by Ralph Rainger with lyrics by Leo Robin.[1] It was introduced in the 1938 film The Big Broadcast of 1938 by Bob Hope and Shirley Ross, and recorded by Shep Fields and His Orchestra featuring John Serry Sr. on accordion in the film and vocals by Bob Goday on Bluebird Records (B-7318, 1937).[2] Dorothy Lamour's solo recording of the song was also popular, and has led to many mistakenly believing over the years that it was she who sang the tune with Hope in the film (in which Lamour also appeared).

In the film, Ross and Hope's characters are a divorced couple who encounter each other aboard a ship. Near the film's end, they poignantly sing one of the many versions of this song, recalling the ups and downs of their relationship[3] (then they decide to get back together).

So was the point of launching a Zaporizhzhia Offensive just to raise Russian morale and to make the Ukrainians panic (and focus less on more important fronts like Bakhmut and Svatove-Kremmina line)

The timing was so close to the Fall of Soledar too

The fact that we as a society have reached the point where an obvious Bob Hope reference needs to be explained depresses me...

I’m not sure why people have created such a fuss around these Abrams.

Saudi Abrams got battered in Yemen by Ansar Allah, who run around in sandals, carrying AK-47s.

I’m not even sure it’s debatable at this point - they’re barely holding even as it is.

Question because I'm not really informed about tanks but uh, are the M1 Abrams tanks going to be more useful or the Leopard 2 tanks? Given the US is (understandably ig?) not giving them the uranium armor thing, I mean.

If by superior military you mean an outdated, uneffective, , under supplied, and demoralized fighting force that can barely hold agianst what should have been a weak Ukrainian army that is dwarfed by the size of the Russian military..... then yes it a superior military power. The only thing Russia has going for it is their numbers
