A North African has dentition that is more closely related to a European or a Middle Eastern person than a sub-Saharan African.

In fact, I would even argue that the Middle Ages ideas of common Christendom were already good indicators of a common European identity (as much of Christianity was in Europe). That is not to say that being Christian is a requirement for an European identity, much to the contrary, what we see is a continent that is becoming increasingly more irreligious and that too, is part of the evolving European identity that is distinguishable from former colonies like the Americas.
