American Politics 16: After The Ballooning

Postby Shrillland » Wed Dec 21, 2022 11:08 pm

Ah, the Holidays are passing over us, and some of us are feeling nature's cold fury. Still, our hearts will stay warm for about 25 nanoseconds, and we'll cheer 2023 on until a new and divided Congress comes in on Tuesday, January 3. Trump's taxes have finally come out...and they're about what people expected. Election season is finally over for about four months before the other Presidential candidates come out of the woodwork. Life goes on as the Earth makes another spin, and as 2023 will likely start in this thread, let us all remember the words from that great Irish folk song: And let us remember the longer you live, the sooner you're going to die.

Too morbid? I suppose.

In the meantime, have a hopefully happy new year, enjoy your assorted holidays, and don't forget to play nice and not bring Krampus AKA the Mods down upon us. Good? Good.

Plebiscite Plaza 2023:

Louisiana's first amendment, up for a vote on Saturday, November 18, would allow the state legislature to consider vetoed bills during a regular or special session without having to convene a separate veto session. It would also stipulate that the governor's deadline to act on a bill is based on the legislative session in which the bill is passed or vetoed.

Normally, Oklahoma doesn't make odd-numbered year appearances, but a measure got on the ballot too late for 2022. SQ 820, up for a vote on March 7, would legalise marijuana in Oklahoma. Adults over age 21 could possess, transport, or distribute up to one ounce or marijuana, eight grams of concentrated marijuana, or up to eight grams of concentrated marijuana in infused products such as edibles. People could own up to six mature plants and up to six seedlings, and a process would be set up for expungement or modification of previous marijuana-related crimes. Sales would be taxed at 15%, with most funds going to the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority's implementation of this measure. Remaining funds would be distributed to the state's general fund(30%), public school grants to encourage student retention, after-school and enrichment, and campaigns against substance abuse(30%), grants to government agencies and non-profits to fund addiction treatment and OD prevention programmes(20%), the state judicial revolving fund(10%), and the city or county where the weed was sold(10%). REJECTED

Question 1, to be voted on on April 4 with the next measure, would amend the constitution to allow the state legislature to define "serious harm" in relation to the conditions that a judge can impose on an accused person if they're released from jail before conviction. At the moment, judges can impose any condition they want to prevent bodily harm to others.

Question 2 would amend the constitution to allow judges to consider an accused person's previous convictions, the probability of them not appearing in court, the need to protect the community from serious harm(as defined by Question 1 if it passes), the need to protect witnesses from harm, and any potential affirmative defences before setting cash bail amounts.

Schumer filed cloture to shut down debate on omnibus bill

i try to avoid procedural step reporting bc most of the time it's not important but in this case it is bc both sides can't agree on amendments (in this case, the key dispute comes from an amendment from Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), who wants a vote on his amendment to extend Title 42 at a 50-vote threshold)

schumer filing cloture means either they reach a deal on votes Thursday or there’s a Friday vote where 10 Republicans s will have to vote with the Dems to break a filibuster to advance the bill

Speaking of immigration, ive only just gave a cursory glance through some of its contents thus far, but I didnt see anything mentioned about border security programs- aside from the vote to extend title 42.

Is there any significant spending being allocated to USBP, ICE, or CBP? I Ask assuming that you've looked into the bill more depth.

What are people's thoughts about the Android 11 or newer lock screens? There is a law that requires that the emergency services button be on the lock screen.

But the current situation is an outrage! The button is located right underneath the 0 on numpad and can too easily be pressed accidentally or pocket dialed. Mobile phone users should be allowed to disable/remove the button or at least granularly change it's location to be out of the way, or require a 2nd press in under 20 seconds to go through.

Won't police precincts eventually want to complain to Google/Android about all the false positive calls and Android complain to the lawmakers?

I am looking for solutions to this, that doesn't involve rooting the phone, or turning off the security. It is looking like I need a third party replacement lock screen that can hide the button or move its position on screen.

I don't usually question the wisdom of apple, but there should be a second button for the response of an Emergency Mental Health Team.

Not sure what you mean.

I've a phone with the same thing; you have to actively type out the emergency number after tapping the "emergency services" button and then press the dial button to make the call.

Trumpism is the kind of thing that's been in the body politic for a while now but only recently got thrust into the spotlight. That is to say it won't be leaving.
