Apparently, you don't win elections for the GOP without sowing paranoia and fear.

Well, they say that this Census will ask more personal questions. And Census data has been misused in the past. However, if one is uncomfortible with questions, then simply don't answer them. There isn't any rational reason to oppose the entire census on those grounds.

I was a US Census Enumerator back in 1990. Great summer job.

I didn't give out the questionnaires -- my job was to find all the living quarters in the district I was assigned and plot them on a map using the previous Census's address list as a base and adding new LQs as I found them. Once the enumeration is done, the questionnaire is sent out. However, that was 20 years ago, and computers/GPS may have updated that process dramatically since then.

I gotta repeat it, though -- GREAT summer job. Driving all over a census district and looking for houses, trailers, hovels, you name it. US Census credential badge and everything, and $8/hour plus mileage (on my own car) for three months back when that wage was excellent for a 19-year-old.

According to the Census Bureau, they're only using short-forms this time, and most of them will be mailed.

Arguably it's how a significant proportion of politicians from both side of the aisle stay in power.

In the this country it's the use of 'safe seats' - the party assigns a candidate to a constituency and because voting is generally done on party lines in this country (because overall the impact of a particular party controlling the government is far more significant than the identity of your particular MP) some constituencies are 'safe' seats where if you belong to a particular party you are pretty much guaranteed to get (re)elected. Although sometimes you do get a shake up, like the Conservatives got in 97 and I suspect Labour is going to loose a lot of their safe seats to either the Tories or Lib Dems in the next election

Actually, portions of the Census are mandatory to cooperate with. You can be arrested for refusing to answer the questions.

I don't know the exact punishment, though.

Cooperate is so much more then not refusing to give an answer.
I could give the answer I don't know. which is answering the question but not cooperating and not helping the census.
