It's more than a little crass.

You can mourn Elizabeth as who she was as a person and still be against the idea of monarchy. If anything it just shows Elizabeth was what made the institution tolerable.

The Queen and other members of the royal family are responsible for managing various estates as well as doing all their hand shaking and waving, and from what I understand they've all done it remarkably well and have a track record of doing good things for their tenants. The Queen definitely wasn't just sitting around, and neither was Charles when he was the Prince of Wales.

I don't believe anybody benefits from changing from a constitutional monarchy to a republic, I think politicians discussing it need to find something more important to do.

Regardless of what we think about the desirability of this course of action, this is only something the King of Canada can do if his government in Ottawa advises him to do so.

The King of Canada is no more able to act independently of the advice of his Canadian government has he can act independently of the advice of the British government is in his capacity as King of the United Kingdom.

It wouldn't hurt for people to be able to separate out what they think might be a desirable course of action for the new monarch from what's a possible course of action for the new monarch.

When it comes to British food and drink, we have never had it so good.

However, at the moment we import two thirds of our cheese.

Well of course it does. What better time than at the accession of a new king to observe that having a king is pretty cringe.

Feel free to have that discussion the next time Ireland proclaims a new King.

For context, the First Nations of BC are in an interesting position where their territories were never legally annexed by the then British Empire, as was done through treaties for most of the rest of Canada, in a process that's now called the 'extinguishment' of Aboriginal title. Settlers merely arrived, and asserted British sovereignty in the area. Supreme Court cases in the 90's, notably Delgamuukw v British Columbia (aka Delgamuukw v The Queen) found that these First Nations without treaties have unceded Aboriginal title to their traditional territories because of that lack of extinguishment, circumscribed under the overall authority of the Crown, and by extent the Canadian government, which still asserts overall sovereignty rooted in that Doctrine of Discovery. Revoking that Doctrine would remove a major plank in the Canadian government's ability to dictate terms on what that Aboriginal title consists of, ie is it just to the stewardship and use of the land, or is it actual sovereignty, as one would expect with entities who were otherwise annexed in treaties in a nation-to-nation manner.

While I'm sympathetic to a united Ireland, Ireland is divided from north and south because that is what the majority of people in the north wanted.

I don't see a reason to override the will of North Irelanders for the sake of a minority within their region, and nationalists in Ireland proper.
