The key issue in my interpretation is that the Treaty of Waitangi gives governance to the crown specifically, so breaking ties with said crown would delegitimise Parliament’s right to govern as it would no longer source its own authority from the crown. Or something along those lines.

This is all Lizz Truss' fault. The timing is too close for it to be a coincidence.

If New Zealand becomes a republic with our current constitutional framework, it'll be an absolute disaster. We would need very serious constitutional reform first, otherwise I'd give it a month before we descend into dictatorship. At the moment we have no checks and balances whatsoever, the only thing keeping New Zealand a democracy is a (merciful) lack of ambition from our politicians and a little old lady living in Scotland.

(This might need to be discussed at a later date in another thread, lest this become a threadjack.)

I agree that this would be certainly very interesting to discuss at a later point somewhere else, mostly because I disagree with your points :p

"The queen has been experiencing episodes of mobility issues and has been walking with a cane since October 2021. In November 2021, the monarch decided against attending a Remembrance Day ceremony because she was suffering from a sprained back."

In early 2022, the palace announced the queen had contracted COVID-19, stating, "Her Majesty is experiencing mild cold-like symptoms but expects to continue light duties at Windsor over the coming week."

I'm a British citizen by descent, born and raised in France by a British mother and French father (whose paternal grandfather was British).

I feel... more anxious and moved than I would have expected.

Obviously we all knew the Queen isn't eternal, but she seemed eternal. Without her, it would be the end of an era, a huge segment of history she effectively embodies.

Also, she's been a good and very dutiful Queen.

For what little it's worth, I wish her well, and sympathise with her worried family. I hope she'll be OK.

Assuming that she's human, eh? :p

Lizards tend to live shorter lives than humans, so her innings is doubly impressive.

Actually, polls suggest that among Maori there are proportionally more monarchists than among other New Zealanders.

The main reason no doubt is that the Crown is a valued and respected partner within the framework of the Treaty of Waitangi. Of course, "the Crown" now constitutionally refers to Her Majesty's Ministers in New Zealand, but the symbolism remains important.

I would guess that Maori support for the monarchy is also due to many Maori having parents, grand-parents and great-grandparents who fought for King and country in past wars (hence why Maori voted more strongly than other New Zealanders to keep the Union Jack in the corner of New Zealand's flag in the 2016 referendum), and simply to the fact that any New Zealanders who are a long-standing part of the country's history are more likely than the many very recent immigrants to be attached to New Zealand's institutions and traditions, including the Crown.

It may also help that the Queen's representative in New Zealand (i.e., the person exercising the functions of New Zealand's head of state) is, for the third time in recent decades, a Maori.

Formal moderator ruling:

New Zealand is a Commonwealth Realm where the Queen is head of state. As such, discussion of the constitutional impact of the possible death of New Zealand's head of state is relevant to the thread.

Yeah apparently BBC One has suspended regular programs until 6 pm GMT, no idea what's that in my local timezone. Interestingly, I saw a tweet about how "something big happening in the Commons" 2 hours ago, with big shots of both sides exchanging notes and looking gloomy.

While I hope that she recovers, given the whole family has headed to Balmoral, this might be it.

I'm not sure what Canada will do beyond the half-mast, condolence guestbooks, and releasing new coins in 2023 or 2024 featuring Charles III's (or whatever Prince Chuck calls himself when he becomes King) face, to be honest. But I do think this will probably be just as, if not more impactful than the death of the late NDP leader Jack Layton among the general public.

I have heard the news and this had made me realise how much I seemed to ignore and take her majesty the Queen for granted, I just feel really bad about this situation and I just hope she becomes better, her optimistic personality made her majesty one of the most influential figures in Modern-British history.
