You do realize that the average global temperature has already increased right?

Oh yeah? Then why are there still monkeys ... no, wait, I mean, why do we still have snow?

All fun and games until an absolutely serious lawmaker brings a snowball into Congress as "proof" that global warming isn't real.

How does easier immagration=ilegal immigration.

We have no obligation to make immigration easier, nobody has a right to come here.

Kind of a shitty attitude from a country made up of people who invited themselves here. I mean, it was enough of our identity that there's a thing about it inscribed on the tablet of the giant statue in the New York harbor.

It's not an attitude, it's merely a fact and one that needs to be acknowledged if there's to be any meaningful discussion on immigration reform is to be had: no nation has an obligation to let anybody immigrate into their country. Every country has a right to sovereign control of its own borders.

I think it's important to try to ground this conversation in specifics. When we talk in general about ideals - about how we're a nation of immigrants, or about how sovereignty entails the right to control our border - we tend to distort both our own position and the other side's. I doubt you think that everyone in the world has an absolute right to come to America and stay, no matter what; I doubt Tars thinks that the country would be stronger or more virtuous if we kept absolutely everyone out. The real question is one of degree, and one of specifics: how many people should we let in, by what process, based on what criteria? If we focus on those questions rather than on scoring rhetorical points, we might actually get closer to understanding each other.

I don't think anyone here disputes that a country has a right to control its borders. What is your proposal for curbing illegal immigration?

The best way to decrease illegal immigration is to stop fueling the drug war.
