Which Endless Are You?

Please consider the following hypothetical based on the Sandman series:

Each individual NS poster exists in an alternate universe of Earth. In each Earth there are seven Endless with absolute powers over their respective domains.

The Endless are essentially gods that personify eternal aspects of humanity and existence.

Every version of Earth has 1 NS poster acting as one of the Endless. A poster may travel to another version of Earth but if they do so, their powers become close to non-existent until/unless they travel back to their own domain. Every domain has one of the following:

Destiny - Has absolute and complete Knowledge of everything (big and small) that will, can, and shall happen in the universe. Some things are set in stone, other things may change for that is the nature of reality. Understands more than any other entity how their own actions are constrained by the mechanisms of fate.

Death - Has complete dominion over the birth and death of all mortals. Can end the lives of anyone on the planet instantaneously. When the universe ends, will end everyone including the other Endless and themselves. On most days, runs and administers a relatively consistent statistical system where people are born and die in large numbers. Appears selectively to those who are dying. If Death attempts to kill the other Endless before the right time, they will be re-constituted because it is not the right time.

Dream - Controls the dreams and nightmares of all mortals. Can influence people's hopes, wishes, dreams and perceptions of reality/fantasy. Can put people into eternal sleep.

Destruction - Can destroy things in the mortal plane on a massive scale.

Desire - Influences people's desires and wants, especially in terms of lust and attraction but also in terms of material, career, and artistic ambition.

Despair - Influences the despair of mortals. Has the power to cause massive amounts of depression across space and time.

Delight and Delirium - Just wants to have a good time. Focuses on the pleasures, joys, and highs of life. Can help other mortals experience these things.

If some of these powers sound like they overlap, it's because they probably do. However, somehow in each and every individual universe, the seven Endless can co-exist and the universe can continue to run. Everyone is on at least some level bound by the forces of fate and so unclear rules restrict what every Endless can actually do (rules that only Destiny knows). As a result, some measure of restraint is typically employed to keep the machinery running.

Based on your IRL personality, strengths/weaknesses, interests etc... which Endless are you? In your iteration of Earth, how do you use your powers?

I would probably be Dream because of my interests in writing and creation. I would probably use my powers to make the dreams of mortals more interesting, creating an intricate system of hypotheticals that selected mortals would have to undergo whilst in the dreamland with the intention of positively influencing their actions in the real realm. In the dream world hypotheticals, characters like Witch Queen Annie and chess pro Lucy can be given life and serve a purpose.

Oh no, we're giving NSers god powers. The multiverse really is doomed.

... Anyway, I don't see myself overlapping well with any of these.

I don't really see myself as any sort of god, but I am most assuredly going to worship the Endless whose domain is Destruction, since that's what Megumin basically is.

Are you saying NS users can’t be trusted with power?

It seems to me that you have just described the powers of the entities, and not their personalities. Well I suppose you somewhat did with the Delight one, but even that was just a quick rundown. And the fact is that I don’t have any of these powers, shock I know, so if we don’t know about their personalities how can we tell which one we somewhat resemble?

I see myself as the Endless of Destiny. Not because I am the most *intelligent* or *wise*, but because I can see myself obtaining an unfathomable source of knowledge, only to then learn that the future is entirely inevitable. Even with knowing each and every outcome, these things will still happen. It would most likely result in a morbid outlook on life, but perhaps not an entirely pessimistic one. In knowing said future(s), eventually I would just become attuned to them. Feeling neither optimistic nor pessimistic based on whatever outcome I am foreseeing. However, even with gaining this trait, I would most likely use my knowledge to guide others, but not directly. Strictly telling people what their future/destiny in itself, is a terrible idea. As they can perform rash, unwise choices. Maybe my knowledge will be served to a good purpose, or an evil one. Either way, it is entirely up to those with whom I grant my knowledge, to shape their own destiny.

I'm very obviously a Delight and Delirium kind of guy. I just want us all to get high and get off and pet cuddly animals (not necessarily all at the same time). Diogenes is my dad and Emma Goldman is my mom.

Death.

I'd spam "kill" on the other Endless and let the universe plot its own course. Doubt they'd get much done if they die and get re-constituted every second.

This is a pretty good idea.

None of these entities seem like a good idea to inflict on the world (changing reality or others' perception of it... not good; inducing depression or destruction... not good; controlling others' attractions -- hence free will... not good; even inducing never-ending joy would not be good -- after awhile, people would be too inured to the experience to truly enjoy it, plus people would be too distracted by pleasure to maintain society's necessities), so repeatedly "killing" these Endlesses to prevent them having a chance to wreak havoc would be a reasonable suggestion.

Put me on Team Endless Death for Endlesses, and Leave the Mortals Alone.

No problem at all, I should be thanking you for creating such an interesting thread. It's nice to be more creative in my posts from time to time. (I am not the best writer ever, but it's fun, to say the least.)

I am very glad to hear this. There will be more over the coming months; the reception has been encouraging. I will try to incorporate a variety of themes, choices and dilemmas.

Desire or despair.
Desire to make the world a better place.
Despair to make sure no person ever feels depressed ever again.

Dream basically is just the cooler version of Death with less work to do. I guess that’s true in real life too.

Yes, if any NS user has any sort of power the world will blow up.

Is there an endless who doesn't get all their ideas from whatever TV show they just happened to have watched this week?
Cause I'll be that one.

Probably Death, largely due to my interests in statistics, list-keeping, time-keeping etc.
