Considering her well-known history of sexual abuse, and pretty severe mental issues (hell, at one point she thought she was God and was going to take people to heaven in a spaceship), coked up or not, I do also feel bad for her.

Exactly! I have known many people who suffer from things like anxiety, autism, depression, and they are responsible people who never do reckless or criminal stuff like this. Why? Because they are good, responsible people. I myself have schizophrenia but have even thought of turning to street drugs or crime.

Heche wasn't a bad, irresponsible person because of her mental problems. She was just a bad person who happened to also have mental problems. The two are not connected. It all depends on your personality traits. People using their mental problems as a clutch to excuse their behavior is a major reason why people don't take this stuff seriously or just view all mentally unhealthy people as a danger to society.
