On a completely unrelated note, many Russian governmental agencies are now forbidding their employees with access to confidential information any exit from the country. I only have access to “service-only” info so I’m excluded but that’s one more reason for me to evacuate from the country ASAP

And that wasn't a terribly uncommon viewpoint either. A lot of Americans believed NATO should be either dissolved or we should leave it, and now that position is the fringe minority one thanks to Putin.

The logic is actually pretty sound, if Russia did rapidly defeat Ukraine the Europeans likely would have thrown a fit but not applied major sanctions, just like 2014. But the war effort on the part of the Russians collapsed and everyone learned they aren't a nation to be feared anymore, so it emboldened Europe instead.
