According to legend, the Roman Emperor Caligula made his horse a Senator.

Minnesotans have gone Caligula one better and made a horse's ass a Senator.

Way to go, Minnesotans. Especially the 400,000+ who voted third-party and made this disgrace possible.

I'm fairly certain Caligula made his horse a consul, not a Senator.

she is the one who wanted to reinstate the house unamerican activities committee starting off with investigating congress for unamerican members.

her most recent absurdity is declaring that she will not fill out next years census form beyond answering how many people live at her address.

The consuls were, until Augustus made them more or less decorative, the chief executives of the Res Publica Romana.

You had to be a senator in order to be a consul. But Roman senator =/= US Senator. Senator in Ancient Rome a classification by property worth, you had to own a million sesterces or something, I forget the exact number.

And we drove Marilyn Musgrave out of office in Colorado last year, so the ranks of the ultra conservatives got thinned out. Musgrave was so pissed off that she lost she refused to congratulate her opponent, not even if one of those teeth-clenched, I-don't-mean-this tones of voice. Even the state Republicans were telling her to behave and be nice. I'm not sure she ever did make the call.

I personally (since I belong to one of those "third party" things) don't have a problem with folk actually voting for who they believe will do the job, instead of feeling constrained to choose between Tweedle-Dem and Tweedle-Rep only.

At last, I agree with New Mitanni on something!

Splitting the vote in Minnesota stopped Minnesota having a representative for half a year.

Of course, if the loser had just bowed out as soon as it became clear he'd lost, it could have all been avoided, and Franken could have been in Washington working.

True, but I think the voting system is more to blame than the voters. A system where you only vote for one person allows brouhahas like this or the 2000 presidential to happen as often as they do. (Which actually isn't that often. But still, it could be avoided.)

Consuls were Senators, and the highest ranked ones as well.

No, no, no. To be elected consul was the highest attainment a man could hope for in Rome. The two consuls of each year were the heads of the government, the highest magistrates, the co-commanders-in-chief of the Army. You had to be a senator to become consul (except for Pompey the Great in first time but those were strained times).

US presidential elections have only gone to the House twice (1824 and 1876), and only twice, in a two-man ran, has the winner of the popular vote not become president (1876 and 2000). So I think we're doing fine, thanks.

There were two Consuls, who ruled for a year and then another election or something happened. They ruled above the senate.Julius/Caligula/Little boots was dictator for six months, got syphilis, and then made his horse a senator.
