Police are, on average, neither heroes nor villains. You're not a hero for doing your job, but for going above and beyond its expectations. Nor are you a villain for not doing your job—at worst, you're incompetent, perhaps even criminally so—but for willfully going against what it stands for.
If the priority for officers of the law is "going home at the end of their shift," then they can't be trusted to do their job, period.
Or maybe the police are doing their job: to enforce the will of the state, and nothing more.

I think we can take a sensible, pragmatic look at things in the real world, and say that heroine,.ecstasy, cocaine etc. ought to be illegal. Cannabis is perhaps open to debate. But something I can't stand, is when people are driven by ideological purity. "I'm a liberal, so..." or "I'm a conservative, so...". This is not intelligent philosophy, it's actually just groupthink. "Pure" versions of any ideology, without any rationalisation or reason of individual issues, is foolish.
