No government which has been in charge for too long, wouldn't go to any lengths to hold onto power if desperate enough. If this were in the PRC, Xi Jinping and other decision makers there would be in a full blown panic and would pull out every tool in their arsenal to wrest back control of the situation in defusing it, if not purely by sheer force.

I would implore for India to temporarily annex the country, India has greater manpower and can probably get Sri Lanka under control better than the native authorities. There must be something India could be given, like free mining rights in Sri Lanka for 10 years or something else in exchange for coming to the rescue in preventing a ruinous civil war.

I'm sure that would fly real well with the U.N. seeing as how India is desperately trying to gain a permanent SC seat.....

It's pretty much a completely failed state at this point so the people really had no choice. Good luck in creating a new, hopefully democratic, government. Let's hope they don't get any opportunistic deranged elements trying to push this in other ruinous ways.

All this shows that political dynasties can end up in a catastrophe, for both the dynasts and the common folk. I deeply sympathise with Sri Lankans, while also slightly chuckling at the fact that they get to enjoy luxuries inside their president's home after victoriously storming it. Videos and images of that moment will definitely make it into the history books.

Why make it temporary? Why not a full-on South Asian Union or Federation that would be stronger than the sum of its parts?

Sri Lanka doesn't want to be part of India and has been upset before when India intervened in their domestic affairs.

Ranil Wickremesinghe is also on shaky ground. The protestors also want him to step down because they think he is closely related to the ousted Gotabaya Rajapaksa. His party, the United National Party, was in the previous coalition government with Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and the Eelam People's Democratic Party.

However, the harsh truth is that anyone who is president or prime minister of Sri Lanka will have to try and turn around a country with a ruined credit rating and absolutely no foreign currency to import goods.
