Logical Grade Assessment

Postby Infected Mushroom » Fri Jul 08, 2022 1:33 am

I would like to discuss high school grades.

Specifically, we’ve somehow come to the conclusion that a 75 percent on a report card looks bad. Possibly because it won’t get you into a highly competitive school.

But then just think about it for a second. 75 out of 100, in terms of the raw mathematics that means you are 3/4 competent. Imagine if someone understood 3/4 of all there is to know about fixing cars, 3/4 of all there is to know about planning a city… 3/4 of the sum of all human knowledge? That’s pretty decently good no????

Wouldn’t this logic extend to 51-74 percent too?

So I ask you NSG, is 75 (as a percentage) a good grade or not? Not by what we as a capitalistic society and as a result if market and competitive forces have decided… but objectively.

Options:
1. It’s a terrible grade.
2. It’s an acceptable/average grade.
3. It’s not bad because it means you understand 3/4 of the thing, few adults have 3/4 understanding for most things
4. It’s a good grade.

Please justify your reasoning.

We’ve been led into thinking it’s a bad grade and because of capitalistic competitive forces, it has turned into a bad grade. But in reality, it’s slightly above average because objectively it means you get more than half of what there is to learn.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to extrapolate this out to the limits of all human knowledge. It’s just school.

75/100 is a decent grade, not a good one. It could be a pass grade for a subject that isn't the main focus of the course.

75% is alright. I'd say a decent grade, but remember that in an assessment it's not usually an entire field, just a tiny part of it that's being assessed.

If a kid scores 75% on an English test, does that mean they know 75% of what there is to know about the English language? No, of course not - they only know 75% of what was taught and assessed for. 75% as a number seems pretty good, but it's not so impressive when you consider that it's only in the context of a limited range of knowledge/expertise.

It depends on the test. 75% on the MBE puts you in the top 10% (approx) of candidates. It would get you a C in physics (normally).

These things are just filters anyway and not really valued for the knowledge itself. Life would be cheaper and easier if we just administered intelligence tests.

Q. What do they call the kid who graduates last in his class in medical school?

A. Doctor

And then they don’t get jobs.

Nobody asks for your transcript with your resume. They want to know that you got a degree. And I know people without college degrees who have jobs, so clearly, not true.

For my first professional job out of college they wanted to see my transcript. That was the only one.

Even when I had to go through background checks, they only looked at the degree, not my transcripts

That's not what a grade measures. You're not getting graded on your grasp of all human knowledge. The grade is, roughly, a measure how much you learned of what you were supposed to learn in the class. If you get a 75% in a class, that means that you didn't learn a quarter of what you were supposed to, that you don't know how to do a quarter of the things the class was supposed to teach you to do, that one time out of four when you're faced with a problem that was covered in the class, you don't know how to solve it. That's not good.

(This is leaving aside the question of how accurately a grade actually represents your understanding of the material.)

I sit corrected. But also refer back to a comment on what you call someone who graduates from medical school with a c average: a doctor.

Apparently they don't give D's but end of the day a c average gets you called Dr. Whether out of Harvard or St. George's.

75 is a perfectly fine grade. Not the best but not everyone is going to be great at every subject.

I'm going into 10th grade once fall starts, so I have a strong opinion on this. A 'C' grade is written as average on the report card. Yet the several times I've gotten a C, my parents always grounded me. Granted, it was definitely not the best I could do, but I still got yelled at.

The reason why parents are upset with a C grade is this: could you get into Stanford with a C average report card? No, you couldn't. I still agree that a C should not be worth getting in trouble for, but you have to see the other side of the argument.

Knowing 51% of something is concerning for a lot of professions. Imagine if you had a surgeon, lawyer, pilot, civil engineer etc. who only knew slightly more than half of what they were doing. It really depends on whether you expect that knowledge to be used at all. You can make that argument for just passing school, but if it’s actually part of a job, that’s not enough.

Only reason I remember my Spanish class at all is because my Spanish teacher was arrested because she let her boyfriened sext students in the Spanish club.
