I have two thoughts on this.

First, in all the reporting I have seen the one thing conspicuous by its absence has been any statements that she was not in possession of the drugs in question. If she is innocent, why does no one say so; if she is guilty why shouldn't she be prosecuted?

Second, she has been held in jail for about 4 months awaiting trial, which began on Friday. If that is 'wrongfully detained' then why is Mr. Biden and the press not even more concerned with those who are detained in places like Rikers for years before seeing a trial?

The fact that she is a sports star does not and should not grant her any special treatment.

I don't know if she did the crime or not. Don't trust Russia. But also not too sympathetic.

She was foolish to come to that country if she knew of the geopolitical situation ahead of time. I don't care if the sports team would say you have to go, I'd tell them I'm not going or participating in that specific match/game because I can't trust that Russia won't try to detain me and hold me for ransom or as some bargaining tool against the US- because of war in Ukraine.

They could fire me or wait until I'm available for other matches/events in friendly territory, were I a pro-athlete.

I'd at minimum vet every government of every location I'm going to and their possible motivations or recent actions with regards to their foreign policy. If it's too risky/dangerous and they're effectively hostile to where I'm from, then I'd have to stay clear away from them. You don't go to North Korea for example, if you're American and so on.

I dont like it. I do find it very amusing in an ironic sense. I do see it as a "you think the US is bad, now learn what bad really is" moment.

In a better world she wouldn't have to bring it in she could just buy it there, but this isn't a better world.

Not only does smuggling drugs always have bad idea written all over it, Griner chose to do it in Russia of all places. I have no sympathy for such stupid people. Being American and famous is no excuse for this.
