My first language is Dutch, which I also study in university. Living in the Netherlands, Dutch is also my primary language, though in daily life I do consume a lot of media in English and German as well: my second languages in order of proficiency.

A bit less related to the actual question (as it's about languages you actually use), I can read Middle Dutch quite well (the Dutch dialects as they were spoken between about 1000 en 1500), and can also pretty competently write in Middle Dutch. For tongue-in-cheek purposes, of course, like making a medieval prologue for a 'Nijntje' book (called 'Miffy' in English).

German as a native, English and Turkish to about the same level, got a C2 in English. A smattering of Danish and Italian, and I can curse in Russian and a bit of whatever kind of arab our dishwasher is trying to teach me.

Oh, and Latin, if that counts... had to pick a second language in school and the French-teacher was a total Козёл.

Fluent in English with a pretty workable knowledge of Irish and Scottish Gaelic, though I still struggle heavily to actually read the latter two and have a much easier time with speech. Apart from that I also know bits and pieces of both currently spoken and extinct languages.

Oh they certainly had classes but fuck if I remember any of that I think I can say, like, 3 things in French and that's about it. I never particularly wanted to learn the language so I didn't try very hard. My learning of Irish and Scottish Gaelic is more of a passion project so I'm actually putting time and effort into them.

When I play baseball I say things in German that I wouldn't normally say when the ump effs up.

Maybe younger people but not older. Actually not even all young people speak English. Knowing more then one language gives you more opportunities, better knowledge and doesn't make you look narcissistic for thinking your native language is superior

Dude nearly everyone in the US speaks English. WRA is in the US where most people speak English because it’s easy and nobody needs to speak another language.

The US isn’t like Europe when it makes speaking another language important.
