Death Metal in the Camp

Postby Infected Mushroom » Tue Jul 05, 2022 6:46 pm

Please consider the following hypothetical:

You are a high school student at an evangelical Christian school. You personally may or may not believe in the religion but it’s not a factor in your parents’ decision to put you there (“Deal with it. Convert, believe, or don’t. And if they give you a hard time, you can always go along and pretend.”)

The school makes it a rule that you have to attend (and your parents must pay for) a 2-3 week stay at a Christian camp in which there are games, food, activities, but most importantly mandatory sermons are the norm. During this time, there is a talent show.

You don’t participate in the talent show. At this talent show there’s an endless runthrough of light hearted but proper snippets of acting/musicals, peaceful singing, and sone piano performances.

And then these 4 students (from a year younger that you don’t know well) get on the stage. By general reputation they are rebels and troublemakers. They perform The End by Bullet for My Valentine live.

They give a convincing performance as rock instrumentalists and vocalists but because of the death metal vibes to the song, the teachers are all frowning (except for the drama teacher who smiles). About 70-80 percent of the students in the crowd look angry/concerned.

The band extends the live performance and loops the parts where the singers growl several times over. In the middle of the performance, a very angry looking PE teacher gets up and lifts off several speakers from the camp gymnasium. However, the music continues to play largely uninterrupted somehow (the performers are not intimidated). After the performance, the crowd claps though there is very little cheering and the volume is down compared to the other mainstream performances.

Following the incident, the school has received complaints from the parents about this camp and are looking to sanction the students who took part in the “death metal performance.”

On the one hand they are offended by the music and it’s impact on the spirituality of the students, on the other hand they do realize there’s no explicit rule banning what they did and they don’t want to come across as too harsh. At the same time, the Christian parents donate a lot of money and they are vocal.

To appear balanced, they begin to collect opinions from randomly selected students on what should be done. You are selected. When interviewed what do you say? They will ask you

1. How have you been impacted by the students’ performance of that song at a worship event?

2. Is it an okay thing to do?

3. What else can you tell me about those students?

4. What kind of disciplinary measures if any, should be taken?

They tell you you are 100 percent free to speak your mind without consequences but you are aware that in the past, students have suffered from subtle degrees of ostracization and differential treatment if they don’t align with the school’s theology.

What do you say in answer to those questions? Keep in mind that your parents want you to play ball with the school and won’t be in your corner if there’s a fall out.

I do feel sympathetic towards the students. It’s incredibly unethical and not modern to force me and my peers to attend this camp. In-scenario I’d be making off the record comments comparing the food and accommodations to WWII and being bored out of my mind at every turn. That said, if the school sought me out I’d be very much concerned about the possibility of retaliation and I’d have a reputation to preserve, so in the end I’d probably end up giving diplomatic answers to try and placate both sides. Something like…

“I think they should have been aware that such music might offend people. I don’t think they did anything wrong intentionally; the camp was still a success and many people found God. … I can’t say I knew them well, they are not in my grade… As for disciplinary measures, I don’t know. Maybe just give them a simple warning/communication? It’s the first time they’ve been out of line in this particular style right? Mercy and understanding is the way of the truth I think.”

1. How have you been impacted by the students’ performance of that song at a worship event?

Well, they could have picked a better band. Emo-shite like that, really now...

2. Is it an okay thing to do?

No, playing emo-music is never a good thing.

3. What else can you tell me about those students?

They inject at least 4 Marihuanas a day and eat unborn babies for breakfast.

4. What kind of disciplinary measures if any, should be taken?

You should take out your board of faith and perform at least ten Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem.

The scenario is set around the time of the second US war against Iraq.

So literally again while I was in high school. You do remember that the US was in Iraq from 03 to 2011 right? And then again from 2013 to 2021.

Still the band picked isn’t even death metal, death metal is more of Venom, Slayer, Obituary, Possessed, Morbid Angel, In Flames, God Macabre and others

Wasn’t it just two wars?

Around 2004-5 then.

Bullet for My Valentine isn't Death Metal. Growling doesn't automatically make you Death Metal.

In all likelihood. The thing is, the school sees it as un-Christian and those parents are making a mess.

Ya Bullet for My Valentine is metalcore not death metal.

Death metal is more of Morbid Angel, In Flames, and God Macabre type bands

It was three.

Then I’m not in high school. Besides Bullet for My Valentine is emo type not death metal

Then you’ve completely borked your entire storyline and topic headline.

I don’t personally have an issue with the music. Topic headline is from the school’s POV.

1. How have you been impacted by the students’ performance of that song at a worship event? It was a welcome and refreshing relief from an overdose of groupthink.

2. Is it an okay thing to do? Of course it is. They are using their god-given talents. Being able to play and sing music require dedication and hard work, and a good stage presence/confidence will make them more successful in anything they choose -- including speaking from the pulpit or playing the organ when they are older, if they so choose that path.

3. What else can you tell me about those students? Remember that Jesus chose a different path than those the religious leaders of his time approved of. Trust in God, and in his plan for them.

4. What kind of disciplinary measures if any, should be taken? None. It's music. There's even less chance of indoctrinating anyone than the sermons here. Remember that faith is like a seed -- and if it hits the rocky ground, it will be rejected. Only those who are here of their own volition are the rich ground hungry to receive the word.

I went to one of these retreats once. None of us could wait until we were allowed to go out on the grounds and play -- by which I meant run wild rock climbing etc after hours of sitting still being bored to death.

I don’t buy this because your trying to sell it as death metal. It’s not. At most you could claim emo, which was a concern at the time btw.

Everyone I know who went to these horrible kind of camps as teens told me the two kinds of camps you got was all the teens were having sex with each other or most of the staff is now in prison for grooming the teens. I don’t like either possibility honestly.

In regards to the teens all having sex? Repression + hormones + lack of supervision equals a mess.

In regards to being groomed? Well ya got people put in charge of kids and then they stay away from family for two weeks while telling their victims it’s what god wants.

I find it odd to be worried about a song somehow indoctrinating kids who are in a camp meant to indoctrinate them, but I don't think it'd be worth the energy to argue.

Not really my decision/idk

No one expects high schoolers to have formulated meaningful opinions about anything or anyone, seeming indifferent and like you weren’t really paying attention and offering minimal information avoids getting ostracized/punished and doesn’t leave you in a position of ratting on people

Incidentally this is also true in most of adult life after high school lol

A. Are we back in the 80's...?

B. BfmV isn't death metal, they're thrash and emo.

Cannibal Corpse is death metal, it's kinda in the name.

The song in the OP came out in 2005. It wouldn’t work in the 1980s.
