The Hair Thread

Most people have hair on their head, as such- it is an important part of identity or fashion.

A different haircut changes the way you're perceived by others if not how you perceive yourself. But it can also extend to facial hair, in the case of those who're bald or not; and whether someone willingly wears a wig or not, or dyes their hair or goes about "owning" their natural/graying hair if they're too old. Many of those options don't look good, but can sometimes be pulled off by certain people. Its usually just a matter of trying to find your "right" look for you.

There are too many different hairstyles and trends to list for the purposes of the poll, so what specific hairstyle/haircut do you most commonly wear or favor if you had to choose? Sometimes people choose well and look great as a result, whilst other people choose wrongly and look terrible or just go with what is comfortable or easy. This is not to try to make any judgement calls, more like a survey of what people wind up doing with their look?

For a long time I've favored short haircuts or slicked back hairstyles if my hair was currently longer, to keep bangs out of my eyes.

Now I unfortunately, seem to have alopecia going on- where I'm gradually losing my hair from my hair follicles narrowing too much because of endocrine problems I have. If I wind up going bald over the long term, I'm determined to find a way to make that look good. It seems for that situation, it favors a well groomed or prominent beard. Unless if I want to wind up looking like Mr. Clean which perhaps wouldn't go over too well.

I'm switching to a short Julius Caesar haircut soon, or some style that is combed forward but good for thinning hair. Feel free to share what specific haircut/style you have/want as of now, if not to show pictures if the term for it doesn't have accurate Google image results? The best way to get a haircut usually is to find a picture of exactly what you want- instead of having your barber/hairstylist try to suss out how much/little they should cut and what else to do.

Other potential lines of discussion include but aren't limited to: what do you do with regards to facial hair? What looks good or bad to you? Why or how did you gravitate to the specific look you wear? What are some you'd like to try after your hair is long enough for a change in look and so on? One thing I've determined is that I can't/shouldn't wear wigs and I can't dye my hair without it looking out of place. Whatever I have, is what I have to work within.

But how do you feel about where you'll go with your own hair/look? Discuss.

From my dad, I received his European facial features, but luckily not his lack of hair. From my mom, who is Japanese, I got smooth, straight black hair that I usually keep medium length (10-15 cm). While I like my hair color, I have dyed it various colors in the past.

I have very naturally curly hair, to the point where I've had people compliment me on a perm that doesn't exist. In the past, I tried to minimize the maintenance by cutting my hair short and doing a nasty-looking combover, but I realized after years of awful, cheap haircuts that my hair works best when it grows longer and stays natural. Nowadays, my hairstyle depends on where I'm going. If I'm going out on an errand or staying in the house, I let my hair stay in a messy, thick, curly look. If I'm going out with friends and I'm dressing up a little, I like to blowdry and straighten my hair with a line-up.

I have long straight hair about half-way down my back, with a little bit of an undercut on the sides. I usually put it in a ponytail so it doesn't get tangled too much.

Oldschool short hair. Used to have a proper heavy metal mane, but then it started...receeding. :D

I have curly hair, so I've grown it very long. The weight of it keeps it fairly straight, and it means that when I have an event to go to I can have an updo, whereas if I cut it short I would just like like Little Orphan Annie.

It's long enough that when it's not in a pony or bun, I can sit on some of it.

Noticed my hair starting to recede when I was like 21. Started shaving it all last year. My self-esteem has definitely improved since I no longer have to see all of my hair falling out in the morning, and trying to cover it up with a mop when I'm not wearing a hat. Would love to have the money to get a transplant but shaving it off is fine too I guess.

I’m half Greek, and my other side is Northern European but with curly hair. So my hair is naturally very curly. I’ve always had something akin to an Afro or Jewfro, and I do like it. But I’ve always wanted to grow my hair down. I’ve just bought some products that should help me get to where I want to be - namely, looking a bit more like Eddie Van Halen or Eddie Munson than Art Garfunkel. I only came to this decision after I cut it last month, so I have a way to go. Anyone have any tips?

I can probably send a picture later to give a better image of what I have.

When I grow my hair long, it gets very curly. People confuse me of being Greek.

You wouldn’t believe how many people ask me if I’m Jewish. It’s a compliment really, but it’s everywhere I go. I was in Quebec at a club and some girls asked me, in French, “vous êtes juif?”. No one ever says Greek. Ever. I have no idea how that keeps happening but it’s at least once a month.

If your hair follicles are too narrow, the hair it could have is gone forever from what I've read. It flat out can't support a strand of hair anymore. Too much testosterone or DHT or both, means you lose the hair on top of your head if biologically male, but that same thing going on, is also a great boon for growing out facial hair in general.

I have no knowledge of whether transplants work for the long term. If the follicles narrow again it'll fall out like last time. It needs a blood supply and so forth going to it.

There is one method backed up by science, but it's very expensive and it's hard to say for sure what it is most often: temporary or permanent fix? It involves taking your blood, extracting plasma from it, and then injecting it into your scalp, to reawaken dormant hair follicles and hoping you see results over time with multiple such sessions.

I use to have this long, straight, soft, red brown hair. It was beautiful, girls use to date me just run their fingers through it. My beard was a bushy bright red...

Not anymore....

Beards grey, hair is black, and I wear it short because its much easier to keep clean.

Would people say it is better to go with a George Costanza look or to shave off the sides or more if you don't have much or any top hair to work with? I think I would opt for a John Malkovich look for when he was "Cyrus the Virus" in Con Air.

My preferred hairstyle is a short to medium length one modeled off my father's.

Too long and thick and it becomes annoying to deal with.

I like my hair long, but my parents (particularly my mum) don't let me, or say is best to have it short.
I just want to have long hair, so I can bleach it down to light blonde.

Wavy, half up half down is the style I typically go for, apart from the occasional times when I tie my hair up completely.

I wish my hair would grow longer naturally but unfortunately it tends to stop around the shoulders which gives me very little to work with.
