The Browser Wars

Postby Neon Lunar Eclipse » Mon Jul 04, 2022 3:10 am

Browsers. Everyone has one. Some prefer one over another, others just use whatever they are given. So what browser do you use? Is there a specific reason why you use it?

When I bought my first computer back in 2011, it came with Internet Explorer installed, but I didn't like it and quickly switched to Mozilla Firefox, which everyone said was better. I liked it a lot better than Explorer because it was faster, more customizable, and safer. But I switched to Chrome in 2019 because Firefox was getting slower and glitchier as time went on. I still use Google Chrome today because it is fast, easy to use, and offers easy access to Google's other services. I never cared for Microsoft Edge because when I tried it it was so slow.

Eh, the browser wars are not really a thing anymore. Doesn't something like 70% or so of the world's internet users (outside of maybe China) use Chrome nowadays?

If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. Chrome is gradually losing popularity from what I have read. In my country, only about half of people use it is seems.

Switched to Firefox because the way Chrome tends to handle appearances of a website is a little off-putting and while trivial, it's my personal pet peeve..

I like using my set of proportional and monospace fonts on every website. Chrome used to be great with it, but it kinda crapped out.

Is Firefox still slow and glitchy? Or has it improved?

It's smooth as butter as far as I'm concerned. Though then again, it's mainly me using on my desktop, so that's kinda expected.

It does pretty decent on my laptop as well, and that was since like 2018 or so. FF is great on both.

Hmm... well I am glad to hear that it seems to have improved. I am still probably going to stick with Chrome though.

Technically one should differentiate between Chrome and Chromium.
I'm using Opera, so Chromium instead of Chrome.
On my PCs that is.
On the covertible it's Chrome because Firefox does not support chrome os.

It depends on how you measure, but full statistics are available here; and even in China Chrome predominates.

At the moment I'm using Edge a bit because I've got like 200 tabs open in "recently closed" so I wince every time I accidentally open a new tab in Chrome. Ever since the pandemic I just can't close tabs. "Ooh, that sounds interesting *six months later* I'm never going to read this" rinse and repeat. However, mostly I really hate Edge.

So, mostly I use Chrome.

Firefox looks clunky but, then, compared to late stage IE, so does Chrome. I do use it on my phone to read fanfic and watch Youtube videos because it lets me use Ublock Origin (an ad blocker). The default Chrome option does not.

But, yes, late stage Internet Explorer was the best browser I've ever used and I really miss, I think it was, IE11.

This isn't a War. This is pest control.

All other Browsers cannot quarrel with Chrome anymore than an ant can quarrel with a boot.

Internet Explorer was retired recently, so it is technically End of Life. People should switch to Edge if they liked IE best.

It doesn't seem to matter these days what browser you use, provided it has large enough market share as to not be considered niche by most websites. They're all about as fast as each other and it's just a matter of RAM usage and other minor things.

Speed isn't the highest priority for me if only a second of page load or so is fast enough. I go with Firefox mainly because it is the king of customizability. It often has extensions other browsers don't have. I keep ads blocked, scripts reduced, have something for right click translating different languages, it's great for my purposes.

I have Chrome incase I need it because it has too much market share, but it is never my main. It's a good browser but a bit lacking in advanced features for my liking.

I use the good ol' Google Chrome, though I've heard that DuckDuckGo does something like keep your personal information encrypted or something? I don't really remember, though I've heard it once from someone who uses it as their primary browser.

Some old proverbs: "Nothing lasts for forever and what rises up must inevitably fall back down to Earth at some point." It is probably impossible for any single browser to stay on top indefinitely. Time works against all things in the end.
