I don't think personally that political beliefs of parties is that consistent over time. The Republican Party of fifty years ago is not the same as the Republican Party of today, same goes for the Democratic Party.

They both are perfect to illustrate the utter falacy that is the two party system. :D

We should of had no political parties and done like George Washington. Then people who have their own beliefs and not gang up on people of different parties even if their belief system is similar.

While it's true that democrats are... extremely different from their 1960 incarnation, Republicans share largely the same common threads going all the way back to the civil war- pro-business, immigration skeptic, pro-military and police, family values. The main innovation is the concern about tax rates.

The early Republican national platforms didn't have much to say about business. In fact, they called for government support in financing a transcontinental railroad and improving rivers and harbors, and they called for protectionism.

Regarding immigration, their 1864 national platform read thusly:

Resolved, That foreign immigration, which in the past has added so much to the wealth, development of resources and increase of power to this nation, the asylum of the oppressed of all nations, should be fostered and encouraged by a liberal and just policy.

Oh, and relating to Carson v. Makin, the 1876 Republican platform explicitly opposed government money funding religious schools, advocating for the Blaine Amendment:

The public school system of the several states is the bulwark of the American republic; and, with a view to its security and permanence, we recommend an amendment to the constitution of the United States, forbidding the application of any public funds or property for the benefit of any school or institution under sectarian control.

The fish trap exists because of the fish. Once you've gotten the fish you can forget the trap. The rabbit snare exists because of the rabbit. Once you've gotten the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words exist because of meaning. Once you've gotten the meaning, you can forget the words. Where can I find a man who has forgotten words so I can talk with him?

Since the World War era, the Democrat Party has housed the march of Progressive social and economic authoritarianism.
Like the Washington Generals at a Harlem Globetrotter exhibition, the Republican party lends the appearance of an opposition party without actually opposing the march.
